INTERNATIONAL NIGHT
| |
The PTA is organizing an International Festival on January 16, 2014. It is a chance to celebrate the diversity within our school. There will be fun, food and friends at this fantastic event! As this is a school wide party, we need A LOT of parent volunteers. Volunteers are needed to help provide tastings of favorite dishes from their culture of origin, create heritage posters, or provide entertainment (in the form of international music, dance or games). Simply complete and return the International Volunteer Request Form https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1xGrevOwKt-V3Hl9rP0YoH6oAoixcHk68Xts_5WdYKxE/viewform by January 13th. Even if you are unable to volunteer, please return the form with your country of origin. If you have any questions, please contact mariehess@gmail.com.

Pinchbeck PTA is pleased to announce its plans for the 13th Annual Science Fair. The science fair will be in the gymnasium on Friday, January 31st. Science fair tours and demonstrations will take place during school hours. All students will be allowed to attend the science fair activities regardless of whether or not they have submitted a project.
(Please note that participation in the science Fair is mandatory for all 4th grade students.)
For information about doing a science project, click the following link: 2014 Science Fair Information Packet . This link also includes several project ideas and helpful websites. Projects will not be judged. All students participating in the fair will be given a ribbon by the PTA. Digital certificates of science fair participation will be presented to students who register an email address. If a student does not have an email address, contact Jennifer Krug for a printed version of the certificate.
Please register your student by Friday, January 10, 2013, in order to allow the PTA enough time to order tables and participation ribbons. Click here to register: 2014 Science Fair Registration

PINCHBECK'S GOT TALENT - 2014!
| |
We are very excited to announce that the Pinchbeck's Got Talent 2014 show will be taking place once again in the spacious Godwin High School Auditorium. Our talented PES children will take the stage on
Friday, March 7th at 7pm.
MARK your CALENDARS to sign up ONLINE through a link in the Monday, January 13th PTA newsletter! Our stage time is restricted, thus we will be limiting the acts this year to the first thirty-five (35) acts who sign up online.
Start thinking about an act over the holidays! Please keep in mind the necessity for acts that showcase appropriate elementary-age songs, dances and costumes. Because this is a talent show, students WILL NOT be permitted to lip-sync, however, Karaoke-style accompaniment is allowed. Other types of talent acts may include magic, poetry reading, playing an instrument, dance, gymnastics, etc. Each act can be a maximum of two minutes. Students will be permitted to participate in only ONE act this year with no exceptions. The PTA reserves the right to refuse submissions that do not meet the guidelines outlined above.
There will be required after school auditions on Feb. 4th & 5th and a required after school dress rehearsal for all Talent Show participants on Tuesday, March 4th.
Thank you in advance for your support! We can't wait to see you at PINCHBECK'S GOT TALENT 2014!

PHYSICAL EDUCATION BUILDS HEALTHY BODIES
| | Parents, Grades 3-5 have been learning about the five components of fitness. The five components of fitness are important for physical health. Maintaining healthy levels of fitness for each component helps a person live a healthy and productive life. Cardiorespiratory Endurance - Cardiorespiratory endurance is the ability of the heart and lungs to supply oxygen to the muscles during long periods of physical activity. Muscles use oxygen to produce energy for movement. If the heart and lungs are working properly, a person should be able to ride a bike, walk, swim or jog for a long period of time. Keeping the heart and lungs in good shape means not being out of breath as often or getting tired as quickly. Muscular Strength - Muscular strength is the ability of the muscle or muscles to push or pull with its total force. Increased muscular strength allows a person to lift, push, or pull with more force. Strength is always a benefit in any athletic situation but it is also important when the car has a flat tire, the door is stuck, or when the pickle jar cannot be opened. Muscular Endurance - Muscular endurance is the ability of the muscles to repeat a movement many times or hold a position without stopping to rest. Improving muscular endurance allows a person to increase physical activity. A person with improved muscular endurance can accomplish more physical work by moving faster and taking fewer breaks. To improve muscular endurance, exercises should be repeated at least twelve times. Flexibility - Flexibility is the muscles' ability to move a joint through a full range of motion. As people age, muscles shorten and become less flexible. As an example, babies can easily chew on their toes, but most parents cannot. When muscles shorten, a ball cannot be thrown as far because the arm won't be able to move through the entire range of motion. Staying flexible is important for performance as well as preventing injuries. Body Composition - Body composition is the relationship between fat-free mass and fat mass, usually referred to as a percentage of body fat. The body is made up of fat, bones, muscles and organs. Fat free mass includes everything that is not fat (bones, muscles, and organs). Fat mass is the amount of fat being stored in the body. Everybody needs a healthy level of fat because it is important for the insulation of organs, the absorption of vitamins, nerve conduction, and is a source of energy. However, having too much or too little fat can become a health risk. As a person ages, it is important to maintain a healthy balance of fat for a continued quality of life.
