Who's teaching the bankers?
In the U.K. (and I'll bet it goes beyond that country), when a business gets interested in investing in energy efficiency they will often go to a bank for a loan. The problem, though, is that the bankers are not seeing this as a wise investment, so they deny the loans. But there is an answer, and it comes at the end of this article.

Want a house for a thousand bucks?
Erin writes, "Detroit just launched a website (like eBay) to auction 16,000 abandoned homes. The caveat is that the home must be fixed up and have people living in it within six months of purchase - otherwise the city takes it back. If you scroll through the homes here, a lot of them say that they need new furnaces and water heaters. No surprise, but it could mean an upswing in business for local contractors. Oh, and you have to be a Michigan resident to participate in the auction, so that puts the kibosh on your plans for a summer home in Detroit." Oh, well.

Magnets!
Subscriber, Noel Kelly, sent me this link about how magnets will probably play a big role in how we keep our food cool in the future, and perhaps a whole lot more. Thanks, Noel!

Some Swedes leave a warm feeling
Especially around Stockholm. I've mentioned this trend in previous newsletters but the technical details in this video just made me want to share with you again. Waste not, want not.

may be getting their warmth from a server. Here's the story, and don't miss that link near the bottom that takes you to the James Bond Villain data center. Gotta love those Swedes.

The apprenticeship problem
Pretty good overview here of why there are fewer apprenticeships now than there were just a few years ago from the Wall Street Journal. Love to hear your thoughts.

Here's a first
How's this for a novel geothermal installation? Sure is convenient that the well was already there, isn't it? Also says a lot about the capabilities of PEX.

Nothing to do with heating
Subscriber, Jake O'Malley, shared this program with me, along with the comment, "I know you'd find this interesting. Average people using logarithmic thinking and coming up with more-accurate results than the professionals with in-depth classified information. Fascinating!" It struck a cord because I just read Plato at the Googleplex, which has a similar theme going on at one point, but taken from quite a different perspective. Never stop asking questions.
