What would Nikola Tesla do?
Okay, so I admit most of this whole business is more than my feeble brain can process, and none of the technology exists yet, but they are talking DC current instead of AC for this and I like to think that's making Mr. Tesla smile, wherever he may be. And I know Mr. T. invented AC power and not DC, but he chose to live out his days and die in the New Yorker Hotel, which has one heck of a DC power plant in its basement. Did you know that hotel was once the largest private power plant in the U.S. and right there in Midtown Manhattan? Wow!

Hating skylights
More than 20 years ago, when our four daughters were coming of age, The Lovely Marianne and I decided that we needed to stretch the house, so we added a big second floor with lots of space and skylights in two of the rooms, including the bathroom. I despise those skylights. Here are some of the reasons why. We must have been out of our minds.

Those darn market forces
With oil prices being what they are (and were), folks were feeling good about wood, so they anteed-up for wood pellet-burning boilers. But then most places got hit with a winter the likes of which we haven't seen in a very long time, and guess what? The suppliers ran out of pellets and left a lot of folks in t he cold. Oh, well.
|
But wait!
Since there's a shortage of wood pellets, and that's going to make the houses cold, we'll have to get some better insulation into those houses. But we want to be sure to get insulation that's environmentally friendly, right? So let's have it made from, um, let's see, how about wood?!
|
Modern Times
Speaking of insulation. Charlie Chaplin may have thought his times were modern but the insulation methods used in his day were anything but, as this delightful story proves. Need a new boiler? Insulate first (with wood?) and then size the boiler.

When the stingers get stung
You know those TV shows where the producers set up a house with cameras and then call contactors to look at a rigged problem? They're hoping dishonest contractors show up, of course, because, let's face it, who wants to watch contractors do good, honest, reliable work? Well, here's a story about one of those times when their plan backfired. Thanks to Erin for finding this one.

Go Vermont!
A few years ago, I shared a link to the wood-fired (there it is again), district-heating system proposed for the capital of Vermont, beautiful Montpelier. There was much conversation about whether or not to go ahead with that project, but they decided to do it and now it's inspiring the folks in the city to take things even further. Here's their story. And how about that!

Along those same lines
I heard from my friend, Jay Egg, the other day. Jay wrote the book on geothermal. He shared this story with me and I think it makes lots of sense. Love to hear what you think.
