How about that microbial biodiversity?

microbes

And isn't that a delightful term? Check out this hair-raising article. It brings me back to NYC in the early-'80s. Lots of new windows went into old apartment buildings then, and without the air leakage, mold grew everywhere. The solution was to drill holes in the brand-new window frames. Brilliant!

Driving on pond scum
pond scum Special thanks to subscriber, Ray Frechette, for sharing this somewhat disgusting story about what might be the future of the internal combustion engine. Goop in; goop out. What do you think about all of this slop?
And Dumpster dining
dumpster Hey, why not? Some folks truly have the courage of their convictions, and Professor Wilson is one of those men. I suggested to The Lovely Marianne that we try this for a romantic weekend, just so I could write and tell you all about how it went. She gave me that look. You know that look?
Nothing to do with heating
Bezos Ever wonder what it takes to get Jeff Bezos to hire you? It, of course, involves MIT, which means I'll never get to be an Amazon big shot, but it also involves another qualification that leaves me out. I'm chatty. Just ask The Lovely Marianne. Here, see how you'd do.
White roof. Green roof.

A few newsletters ago, I shared a Popular Science story about how a white roof is greener than a green roof. Subscriber, Sean Wiens, wrote to me and I asked his permission to share his thoughts with you. Thanks, Sean!

Hi Dan,

I wanted to provide comment to your newsletter link to the Popular Science article claiming white roofs are the greenest. While this can be true for very hot climates, it often will not be true for heating-dominated climates. RDH is performing a study in the Greater Vancouver Region that has already shown that a black roof is more energy efficient than a white roof in our region. This is due to the fact that a lighter colour roof not only reflects heat in the summer, but also the winter and shoulder months, in turn raising the heating costs. The black roof represented the overall lowest energy costs for the studied building. This is a brief on the study is hereThe details of the study have been presented at several seminar events in the area and have been very enlightening. Also, the efficiency of a white roof diminishes quickly in most areas due to the surface film of dust that forms. This film can lower the reflectivity within weeks to less than 25% of the original virgin white roof.

Cheers!

Sean

Swords into Energy Center
bunker I don't expect you to remember, but I gave a link to this place three years ago (my, how time flies!). They're finally done rebuilding and it's nice to see a building with such a dark history come to this.

woman on computer Nothing to do with heating, but fascinating nevertheless. And, of course, MIT is involved. It's for those who never can say goodbye
