Do furnaces dry out the air?
combustion furnace Good article here from Allison A. Bailes III, PhD.  I understand all that she's saying (and she says it beautifully), but when she gets to the end of the article I wish one of the mentioned options would have been hydronics. But then that wouldn't have been an article about furnaces, would it?

small home I think the house is adorable but my favorite part (and this is something most folks never consider) is how much time it frees up to do other things when your house is this size. Be sure to look at all the photos.
Cold enough for you?
thermometer Apparently not if you happen to live in Vermont. Here's a great story from the irrepressible Martin Holladay. And thanks to subscriber, Chris Crawford for sharing. I'm shivering just thinking about that place.
Build your own Nest
spark Well, sort of. I share this with you for two reasons: First, because it's interesting and always inspiring to know that there are such bright people out there saying, So there! But also because I'd like you introduce you to Grist, which is about as much daily fun as you can have sitting at your desk. And if you take a free subscription to the Daily Grist, you'll get to know Umbra, who writes better than I do and always makes me smile.

Passive apartment buildings
passive apartments We've looked at lots of super-insulated passive houses together in previous newsletters. Most of them are small, right? Are you up for something bigger? Check out what the Swedes are building. Swedes are so much fun. But they're still trying to figure out what to do with those not-so-insulated buildings that went up in the '60s and '70s. And aren't we all?
Nothing to do with heating
singer Subscriber, Ray Frechette, sent me this quick video and it had me rolling on the floor because our daughter, Meg, sings just like the woman in the video (without the sound guy). Meg will be blessing us with Grandchild #4 on or about St. Patty's Day, which is certainly cause for song. I'll provide the earplugs.
Oh, Iceland
What will you folks think of next? I mean, lots of countries are working with geothermal these days, but you're the only country that has the chops to tap into an active volcano.  And we both know what Dr. Evil would say about that.
Hug your kids.
