Learning humility
2013 was a great year for me because a couple guys taught me about humility. They didn't set out to do that, but they wound up doing it anyway. These guys are not of the heating industry, and they came up with ideas that I thought were silly at first. But then I shut up for a while and just listened, mainly because I realized that these guys are really smart. Learning humility involves shutting up. Anyway, they both won me over and I hope to tell you more about what they're up to as time goes by, but for now, I'll share another guy with you (I haven't met this one). Watch the video, get a first impression, and then just be quiet for while. He's not of the heating industry either but I'd like you to break down what he's saying into a core concept. Don't focus on the machine. Just think about what he's suggesting, and then imagine.

Good intentions gone awry?
Here's a story about how things go wrong when people either don't know what they're doing, or perhaps are just trying to save a customer some money. I'm glad the couple survived the chain of events, none of which should have happened. I'm thinking that if you can't do it right you should just stay out of it. What do you think?

Keep it simple
That's the lesson learned in this U.K. study, which subscriber, Andy Rudin, shared with me. It made me think of the Nest thermostat and how it is so intuitive. That's probably one of the big reasons for the product's success. There's also a lesson here for boiler manufacturers. Many of the installers have no idea what those codes on the display mean. I know installers should read the manual, but wouldn't it be better if the screen just said what it has to say in plain English?

Another look
I've mentioned this leaping-droplets discovery out of M.I.T. before, but this article goes into more detail about the possibilities. And aren't we living in wondrous times? I'm not worthy!

District heating in Sweden
The Swedes continue to really think things through when it comes to using energy. These short videos tell a wonderful story. I want to visit all of these places.

The future of fire?
Subscriber, Noel Kelly, sent me this video and asked, "I wonder how many boiler manufacturers are looking at this. . . if any?" Good question, isn't it? Thanks, Noel.

A fine way to start the year
And back to M.I.T. It's nice to see that every now and then the brilliant minds in Cambridge can also screw up. Check this out. Who's the U-boat commander?
