An amazing off-grid house
I watched Larry Weingarten's brand-new DVD about the off-grid house he built (pretty much by himself) in Monterey, California and was amazed at how many creative ways he found to make the place ridiculously efficient without sacrificing any of the conveniences of modern life. Here's more.

50 years of space heating
Subscriber, Andy Rudin, sent me this report, which was a real eye-opener. It's amazing what you can learn when you take a long-view of things. Read it when you have the time and I'd love to hear your thoughts. Thanks, Andy.

Hold your breath
A few weeks ago, I shared a video about buildings that breathe, which got Ed Voytovich's attention. Ed's a subscriber and he wrote to say, "Sung's admittedly clever art is interesting because it moves as a function of heat transfer; but the building definitely does not breathe: it moves." Which is true. Ed also shared this article he wrote on the matter of what does breathe. It's good stuff. Thanks, Ed.

Good point!
And finally (and just for fun), my brilliant daughter, Erin Haskell, who puts this newsletter together for you each week, sent me this one. I'm a native New Yorker and never noticed this. Go ahead; make my day.
