Relative efficiency of big buildings

So New York City just released a report that compares the energy useage of 26,680 of its largest buildings. How's that for a big job? Read all about it here

Wood grows
And not just on trees. Good story here about who's burning wood and where they are, courtesy of the 2012 U.S. census. Note especially what's happening in the Northeast.
Like a Virgin
Richard Branson is championing an idea that's been around for a while but will now get more attention because he is, afterall, Richard Branson. PACE makes sense to me. What do you think? Send me a note.

Evening things out
Subscriber, Ray Frechette, gave me a heads-up about this new type of wall panel that's under development. It contains phase-change material that helps even out the mean radiant temperature of the walls. Interesting stuff.

Nothing to do with heating
Thanks to Michael Nihill for sharing this short video about an amazing machine that is hundreds of years old but still works like a fine watch. Imagine the patience that went into building this thing.
Blimey!
Where's my oil? Folks in the U.K. have been asking that question a lot lately as their oil disappears from their installed-outdoors oil tanks. High prices inspire the thieves. Here's an article with some solutions to the problem. My favorite line from the story: "She also advised placing 'defensive planting' around the tank to deter criminals as thorny bushes could result in evidence, such as blood or bits of clothing, being left at the scene." Pity the poor oil-truck driver.
The pump people won't like this
One of the ways to deal with wind- and solar power when people don't need it is to use the energy to pump water uphill, and then during times when the sun isn't shining or the wind isn't blowing, to let the water flow back downhill through turbines. I like that idea, but now subscriber, Noel Kelly, sends me this story, which also looks very good. Hey, they might even be able to sell this one as an amusement ride.
Hug your kids.
