About energy-management systems
I admit most of them are sexy and have that gee-wiz factor going for them, but should an energy-management system be the knee-jerk proposal for a troubled, steam-heated building as some folks often, well, propose, (and usually with questionable results)? I sure don't think so. Here's my Plumbing & Mechanical column this month. I'd love to get your thoughts.

Think globally?
Or just think about getting credit and getting noticed? Here's a provocative article about what the World Bank takes into consideration when looking to help those less fortunate. Seems that if it isn't a high-profile project it isn't going to get done. Wacky, don't you think?

Chilled beams save dollars
That's the finding of this U.K. study. I remember standing under a cold ceiling in Germany about 15 years ago and marveling at how comfortable it felt compared to having cold air blowing down on me. Looks like there will be more of these in the days ahead. Good stuff!

A change of mind?
In the U.K., where various schemes (I love how they use that term) have encouraged people to get rid of their older boilers in favor of condensing appliances, they are now looking lovingly at heat pumps instead. Here's the story. Be sure to follow the links to the original report from the Energy Savings Trust. Should I stay or should I go?

Nothing to do with heating
But seriously, do you think you could pass this test when you were in the 8th grade? How about now? It made my head spin. Makes you wonder, doesn't it?

On Mr. Horton
I never got to meet the man but he stays in my mind for a lot of reasons. Here's one of those reasons from my recent Supply House Times column. His wife sure knew how to put me in my place. Gosh.

Makes no sense to me
Some time ago, I shared a story with you about the practice in Australian schools of using unvented gas heaters in classrooms. Authorities had done a study and come to the conclusion that it would cost too much money to change the way they were doing things, so they left things as they are. Now there's this story. I think what they've been doing is ridiculous, but that's just me. What do you think?
