How peer pressure affects energy saving

laskey Check out this TED video and let me know what you think. When I first started to hear about this idea I thought Americans who use lots of energy would just smirk and say, "Hey, I can use more energy than the other guy because I can afford it!" But it looks like that first impression of mine was dead wrong. Lots to think about here.

Apropos to that
opower Opower, the company in the TED video also tested to see who uses more energy, conservatives or liberals. Here's what they learned. And then there was this study, showing that how you present a product does make a difference when it comes to a person's political leanings. Aren't people fascinating?
As we swelter in the Northern Hemisphere
New Zealand They're freezing on the other half of the globe. Here's an article about the heating problems in New Zealand, a country famous for it's lack of forethought when it comes to building energy-efficient houses. Insulation matters.

Want this gadget?
sense+ It's not yet in production but I love the concept of this gadget. You plug in your smartphone at night anyway, right? So why not plug it into a device that will detect smoke, fire and CO and then wake you up and make emergency phone calls for you in case you don't wake up. Brilliant!

Nothing to do with heating
meeting But lots to do with the power of words. This is a good one to keep in mind if you ever have to sit in meetings (Who doesn't?).  And I would like to say, once again, that when it comes to MIT, I continue to be intimidated by the size of those brains.

How to bring down a building

Tokyo skyscraper Without imploding it. A couple of neat (literally!) ways to take down tall buildings. I guess this has a bit to do with heating because, let's face it, that's also coming down. Don't miss the video. Aren't the Japanese fun!
Coming up green
graph How about this news? Half the new buildings in the U.S. will be green buildings by 2015. And the reason has more to do with money than anything else. Surprised? Me either.
