A new way to cool buildings
sun Take a look at what the brilliant minds at Stanford University have come up with. It's amazing what happens when smart people look at old problems in new ways. Hey, MIT, it's back to you!

Taco Banner

Garbage wanted
Gremista plant Interesting article here about the effect recycling is having on district-heating plants that burn garbage as the fuel of choice. I love the part where they talk about the heat content of plastics. Anyone who has ever had a few beers around a campfire knows all about that.
And algae!
algae facade Subscriber, Greg Durgin, who sends best wishes from Germany, shared this article with me. Talk about taking a lemon and turning it into lemonade. Well, not exactly a lemon. A bit more icky than that, but you'll get it once you read the story. Thanks, Greg!
Something new in The Library
steam trap Bern Nagengast is ASHRAE's finest historian and the caretaker of an amazing amount of old books and trade journals. Over the years, he has helped me to understand so many nuances of this business and I am forever grateful to him. Bern sent me this article about turn-of-the-century steam traps recently and I wanted to share it with you. Thanks, Bern!
Solar gas
combined reactor heat exchanger I spotted this article a couple of weeks back and have been thinking about it ever since. It has always impressed me how we manage to rise to a challenge with new inventions, or new ways of looking at old problems. Let's keep it up!
Exporting technology
denmark The Danes are at the top of the list when it comes to countries that have embraced district heating in recent years to become more self-sufficient when it comes to energy use. And now it's turned into a major export business for them. Read all about it here. By the way, the last time I was in Denmark, I tried to order a Danish. They just looked at me. My daughter, Meg, got the same blank stare when she asked for a waffle in Belgium. Go figure.
Reality check
mackay Here's a very provocative TED talk from last year. David MacKay uses some very hard math to explore what renewable energy will require of folks in the U.K. Tough to argue with these numbers. Thanks to my brilliant buddy, Dr. Igor Zhadanovsky, for sharing.
Hug your kids.

Dan
