People and energy efficiency

thermogram Scott Kelly did his PhD research at Cambridge in the U.K. on how people affect the government's mandate to make building more efficient. What he found is probably troubling to those who believe in one-size-fits-all policy. Here's a synopsis.

Check out this Passive House
passive house solar installation

Subscriber, Lyndon Than, wrote to say, "This started out as a Passive House, with insulation values thus: R50 basement, R75 walls, R110 Roof, and German PH windows. During construction, we decided to install an 11.2kW PV array on the roof, which was designed to accept it only in future years. The building now generates about three times the heating energy needed in a year, even at a COP of just 1. Of course, there are other loads, DHW, cooling, appliances, etc. Overall, we are probably net zero, quite likely net positive, depending on how many people occupy the building. I'm finally about to submit the permit application for the heating system - including a seasonal storage component." Here's the link to more. And, Lyndon, thanks for sharing with us!

Absolutely nothing to do with heating
beer and labor graph But this certainly makes me glad that I live in the good ol' U.S. of A. And thanks to the ever-resourceful Ray Wohlfarth for always finding new ways to keep me laughing.
America runs on Dunkin'
coffee

Or so says the commercial, but that's not the case at this U.S. Air Force base in Sweden where they've been drinking a special blend made from Hydronica beans. I suppose when you're tapping a pipe for a coffee machine, one pipe is as good as the next. I'm just happy there wasn't a sewage line nearby. That would have lent new meaning to the question, "One lump or two?"

Fairbanks chokes
fairbanks Check out what's going on in this frosty Northern city, and all because of the price of fuel oil. Ever think there'd be a U.S. city that would make the air quality in Beijing look good? Thanks to subscriber, Robert O'Brien, for the heads-up.
Energy independence
feldheim Okay, it's a tiny town in Germany, but they still managed to go completely off the grid. Look at what it took to do that. Imagine the many conservations it must have taken to make this happen. Up for a field trip?

honda logo Honda! Check out this story, and thanks again to Robert O'Brien. In changing times, smart business people always seem to find ways to make new alliances. Makes you want to think more, doesn't it?
