Reaching for Higher Plateaus (one of my favorite articles)
high school I want to share with you my January 2013 column for Plumbing & Mechanical magazine, which also appeared in that fine magazine in January, 1993. As I look at Kelly with our grandchildren I still see her as she was in this story. Daddys are like that, and as the saying goes, A son is a son until he takes a wife, but a daughter's a daughter for the rest of her life. So true.

A happy ending!
harvey The news is filled with stories of people who have sucumbed to carbon monoxide this winter, which is why I was delighted to get this story from Chris Peters. Chris is a trainer at New York State Weatherization Director's Association. Carl, the hero of this story, is also a trainer there. Great work, guys!

library In 1944, with the war coming to an end, the Plumbing and Heating Industries Bureau was gearing up for the good times ahead and the building boom. You'll find some good advice that still applies today and some terrific insights into what was going on during that difficult time. It's in our Library and here's the link
SHUT THE DOOR!
co-op Sorry, I was channeling my dearly departed mother there. That's what she used to shout at me when I, her pudgy lad, would stare too long into the wide-open fridge. "Wadda ya think? I'm made of money!" Turns out she was right (as are all mothers). Check out this story from the U.K. Thanks, Mom!

Nothing to do with heating
track n go Thanks to subscriber, Kurt Massa, for sharing this pulse-pounding video with us. I kept waiting for the part that would end up on America's Funniest Videos, but alas. Oh, and I could do wonders with this beast on the Long Island Expressway!
District cooling
seawater ac Our Swedish friend, Mark Kretz, sent this link about a new district cooling system that will use the Pacific Ocean to cool parts of Honolulu. He writes, "In the beginning, a Swedish firm, Capital Cooling took part in this project (there is district cooling in many Swedish towns). You will find more about Capital Cooling here." Thanks, Mark!

Meanwhile, in Ireland
Ireland Of the 30,000 homes built during the past four years, one in 20 meet the top standard for energy efficiency. The majority rise to (and is this a surprise?) the prevailing building regulations. You have to spend money to save money, but first you have to convince the builders that people will do that. But that seems to be a path of great resistance in Ireland. Here's the story.
Hug your kids.

Dan
