WEEK of 9.22.15

Hi Jack's Team Runners:

What a great weekend to get out there and just run! The upcoming week also looks great for cool training weather.

Chicago Runners - I trust you had a successful last 20 (or 22) mile Long Run. Welcome to the TAPER phase where you will drastically cut back on your weekly mileage to allow your body to fully recover from all the stresses of the running over the last 19 weeks! Speed or Hill work is not recommended during the Tapper phase to avoid the risk of injury. You have done the training - now it's time to get you to the start line - Ready to Run. If you are struggling with a nagging issue - focus on running all miles easy and get extra rest. Enjoy your short 12 mile Long Run this coming weekend.   Next week your Long Run will only be 8 miles!!

NYC Runners - it's time to get excited - you have only six weeks to go! Beginner marathoners this weekend will be your first of two 20 mile Long Runs. Remember to practice your choice of fuel, work on your hydration strategy and determine your best gear that is comfortable for the entire Long Run. Simulate as much as possible your race day to develop a routine - including breakfast, race prep etc. Work on stretching and core exercises to strengthen your core.

Plan A, Plan B, Plan C ...
Two weeks ago I ran the BQ26.2 Marathon and I was on pace to post a PR and Boston Qualify time through ~22 miles (my target was a 3:37 finish), however, I suddenly developed severe tightening in my right hamstring (this has happened before and I have been able to work through it) but my IT band outside my right knee started to hurt sharply. The race day weather was perfect, I was having a great race - quickly I had a decision to make - do I push on and risk serious injury or do I back off and finish without injury and ready to race another day. Believe me I wanted to push on - I have never gone to Boston before but I knew if I tried to continue I might risk a serious injury to the point I might not be able to run for a while, and, I still have the NYC marathon later this fall.
Team Run:  Anyone interested in another team run at the lakefront this Sunday 9/27?
