Deep Green Living

Edited by Marian McCain

with contributions by: Eric Alan, Ted Carter, Helen Cockburn, Rachel Corby,
Duane Elgin, Ellen Gunter, Chris Holmes, Donna Ladkin, Nigel Lees
Sky McCain, Eleanor O'Hanlon, Peter Quince and Marianne Worley

By now, it should be apparent to all of us that if life on this planet Earth is to thrive - or even to survive in any recognizable form - we all need to use fewer resources, take up less space and make various changes in the way we live. Humans are already exceeding the carrying capacity of Earth and altering its natural cycles in potentially catastrophic ways. So either we all learn to live lightly or the game is up. However, living lightly is not a chore or an imposition. It is in fact a path towards greater delight and day-to-day satisfaction. You may already be living more lightly on the Earth than many people you know and paying more attention to how the daily choices you make will impact the planet as a whole. But that is not all. Beyond simply living green there is an even more radical way to live. And that is to understand, with your entire mind and body and soul, that you are not simply 'on' the planet, you are an intrinsic part of the planet. For our Earth is not a chunk of inanimate matter: She is one large living, breathing organism and all Her parts are interconnected and interdependent. When you can truly know and feel yourself not as something separate from the Earth, but as a living part of a greater living organism, a cell in the body of that great living organism that many of us like to call Gaia, you touch into an even deeper level of awareness. And not only to know and understand that but to live your entire life out of that humble knowing, that is deep green living, and that is what this book is about. Deep Green Living is the path of sustainability, spirituality, a sense of permanent and eternal belonging and of deep, abiding joy.

Plant Consciousness 2016

Regent's University London

1st and 2nd October 2016

An event that is revolutionising our relationship with plants

Our disconnect from the natural world has led to the disastrous situation that we now find ourselves in on planet Earth, yet our deep feelings for nature form part of our spiritual longing. The Plant Consciousness 2016 event will demonstrate in dynamic ways the intelligence of the hedgerows and fields outside of the forest, before venturing ever deeper into the Enchanted Woodland where we will learn how to cultivate and nurture our own 'Inner Forest' and why it is essential for the development of consciousness and the well-being of the planet that we do.

We can learn so much from the inherent qualities of the plant kingdom and if we look even closer, from the intelligence that lies behind it. Bringing together the values of plant neurobiology, deep-ecology, eco-psychology, sacred plant medicine, shamanism and herbalism you will discover a deeper understanding and a new harmony with plants and with your place in the biosphere of life on this planet.

Speakers:

* John Perkins - Author, Activist ~ How The Plants Are Guiding Us To A New Consciousness
* Michael Dunning - Yew Shaman ~ Yew - Tree Of Eternity
* Robin Harford - Forager, EatWeeds ~ Contemplating Plants: Coming To Your Senses
* Judy McAllister - Findhorn Association ~ The Voice Of The Forest
* Karen Lawton & Fiona Heckles - The Seed Sistas, Sensory Solutions, Hedgewitches ~ Voices From The Hedgerow
* Kay Haw - Woodland Trust Conservation Advisor ~ Ecology & Conservation
* Jonathon Code - Biodynamic Association ~ Encountering Yarrow: A Miracle Of Creation

Francis of Assisi

contributed by Kelvin Ravenscroft

On Easter Sunday 1980 Pope John Paul II declared Francis of Assisi as the patron saint of ecology and the philosopher Henryk Skolimowski has declared that "We need a new light to brighten up our present sombre horizons. The light of ecological spirituality, guided and inspired by the visions and simplicity of Saint Francis offers us a promising new perspective as we enter the twenty-first century and indeed the Third Millennium".

Deep Time Walk

The Deep Time Walk is a 4.6km walking audio history of life. This unfolding takes you from 4.6bn years ago to the present day, with each metre representing one million years. During the narrated walk you learn how our planet evolved over this vast stretch of time, including the accretion of the Earth from a disc of rocky debris, the formation of the oceans and atmosphere, the appearance of bacteria - the first life, then the first nucleated cells, and, eventually, multicellular organisms. As you walk you begin to recognise the long geological processes and self-regulating patterns that have produced the conditions for the evolution of life.

An app for the Deep Time Walk will be available in the second half of 2016.

Natural Happiness: The roots of resilience

A workshop at Hazel Hill Wood, near Salisbury

22nd - 24th April 2016

Guided by Alan Heeks, Jane Sanders and ... the wood

How can we stay happy and fulfilled in our life and work in the midst of change and uncertainty? What can we learn from nature about deepening our resilience so that daily demands don't deplete us?

This week-end we'll be exploring these questions in the magical setting of a 70 acre wood in full spring. The first aim is to slow down, relax and be nourished. As we deepen into peace and simple presence, the heart of mindfulness, we'll then explore how our sense of community can grow to include the collective wisdom of nature and the 'more than human' world as well as people.

Finally we'll be gathering insights into how to create new responses to daily challenges, drawing on the ecosystem of the wood and the fellowship of the group to help us. In group sessions we'll tap into co-creativity, deep listening, resourcing and the gifts of stillness. There will also be space for solo time in the wood, good food which we will cook together, and campfires, songs and stories among the bluebells.

Poetry, Place & Pilgrimage

Thursday June 9th - Tuesday June 14th

Residential retreat at Boswedden House, Cape Cornwall

The far west of Cornwall, the little triangle between Penzance, St Ives and Land's End, is one of those thin-veil places. This area has one of the densest concentrations of megalithic sites in Europe.

Together we'll explore the megalithic sites, holy wells and coastpath of this magical area (Boswedden House is very close to the sea), after starting each day with some quiet writing and the inspiration of some poetry of place.

In the spirit of pilgrimage, each walk will be in shared silence, but the afternoon sessions will be given over to guided writing, and the evenings to reading back our own poetic responses.

If you are someone with a passion for poetry (even if you've never written it), for the outdoors, and for exploring our inner life, then I'd be delighted if you'd join us. You need to be fit enough to walk up to 5 miles or so at a time; and you need to be comfortable with silence.
