| Our yummy $20 Farmer Pick box this week! |
Apologies again to everyone for the delay in opening the website on Thursday, the storms set everyone back on farm schedules. Our own Farmyard had a foot-deep river running through it! We had to evacuate the Goats to the field as they were standing in rushing water in their pens, sheesh! Hoping that's the worst of Mother Nature's Spring weather for now. We did end up with some changes for our boxes as the weather affected the Broccoli and Strawberries adversely. The Broccoli got waterlogged and was a no-go altogether (we emailed Members who had ordered it directly, in case you miss the Newsletter info). And the Strawberries were just slowed up in their ripening with cloudy days and the cold snap. We made sure everyone got at least one pint of the berries but we did have to make replacements in Farmer Picks (see the list at left for the final box contents). Hopefully everyone understands these necessary changes and we sincerely wish you all are happy with the boxes!
| The tarp on the side of the Goat pens actually helped keep them from flooding and directed the rushing water into the corner! |
We are so happy to announce Wild Heaven Beer is now hosting our Decatur deliveries. Pickup your box, enjoy some local beer, life is good. Also the new Vinings location Canoe Restaurant starts with next week's deliveries! We have worked with the wonderful chefs at Canoe for many years and are happy they offered to host us for their neighborhood. Pickups are Wednesdays or Thursdays from 2pm - 5pm.
Be sure to place your order by Midnight Friday and enter the Coupon Code earlybird when you checkout for $1 off of your total! It helps us a LOT to get a larger number of orders in earlier so we can confirm to the farms what and how much we are projected to need them to deliver. Win-win!
New Supper Club Dates
| | The little buckling named "Stout" and his brother "Harp" are cutie patooties! | |
We had a blast this past Sunday for our April Supper Club! About a dozen folks enjoyed a beautiful Spring day on the Farm with us. This is a really nice sized group and we have decided to keep numbers lower from now on so everyone gets more personal attention. We managed to get the Farmyard cleaned up and fresh straw bedding down so the Baby Goats had a nice pen to romp around with everyone.
Why not enjoy a Sunday drive in the country, get up-close and personal with our Goats and Chickens and enjoy meeting some new folks at one of our upcoming Farmhouse Supper Clubs? Put in your Reservations now for Mothers Day Sunday May 14th or June 11th. Miss Guinness' two little kids are ready for snuggling and Mama Frida will be kidding again any time now!

Weekly Recipe: Strawberry Custard Tarts
 |
| | Make the tarts ahead and top with berries before serving! |
Each week we highlight some of the
ingredients from our boxes with one of our own Farmhouse Recipes. This is the way we cook here on the Farm with our limited kitchen time but love of Good Food. We hope to inspire you to try something new, even if it's just one All-Local Meal a week! The Full Recipe is in the Wednesday Weekly Newsletter. Since the Strawberries were very dear this week you might want to keep this recipe to use later when they are abundant again.
|
We served these on Sunday for the Farmhouse Supper Club: the crust is a snap and you can fill them ahead of time so they are ready to top and serve. You'll love them!
Cookie Crust This short cut makes the tarts a breeze to prepare. Makes enough for two 9" crusts. 1. Pulse 12-15 average sized Shortbread or Sugar Cookies in a food processor with 1/4 cup Butter. You can make them yourself or use store-bought. We have also used Chocolate Cookies, they are great too. 2. Press the cookie crust into the bottom of a springform pan (you can use a large one or individual sized pans). Don't make it too thick: you want it about 1/4" at most. 3. Bake in a 350 degree oven for 15-20 minutes, it will be "set" and will have a dry look to it. Allow to cool completely.
Custard Filling This is the only "hard" part, it does take about 30 minutes but since you make it ahead of time you can prepare the evening before. Makes enough for two 9" tarts. (3) cups Milk or cream (we used 1/2 Whole Milk and 1/2 Heavy Cream) (6) Egg Yolks, beaten (1) cup Sugar (1/2) cup Flour (1/4 cup Corn Starch pinch of salt (1) Tablespoon Vanilla extract Heat the Milk slowly over medium on the stovetop, stirring regularly, do not heat too quickly. In a bowl mix together the Sugar, Flour, Cornstarch and salt. Add the Eggs and combine, mix well. When the Milk is just scalding (starting to skim around the edges) add the Egg mixture slowly to Milk, stirring constantly with a whisk. Continue to cook over medium heat stirring pretty much the whole time until Custard is thickened. Turn off the heat and continue to stir every few minutes until it has cooled (it will continue to thicken as it cools). Stir in the Vanilla.
Assemble the Tart Spread the Custard over the Cookie Crust, you only want it to be about 1/2" thick. Refrigerate for at least an hour or overnight. Top with sliced fresh Strawberries just before serving. If you like you can add a dollop of Whipped Cream on top.
