| Our yummy $20 box for this week's deliveries! |
The first full week of March brought predictably unpredictable Spring storms balanced with plenty of sunshine. We have been working on all kinds of projects here at Moore Farms including new fences for our Goats to help keep them closer to home (they really don't need to have full range of our entire 60 acres). Mama Goat Red is just doing fantastic after her run-in with two strange dogs on our property. She is up and hobbling around, putting more weight on her injured leg every day. Today (Wednesday) she insisted on going back out with the rest of the herd and is getting around really well. When a goat insists you listen. We have not seen "hide nor hair" of the trespassers, though we continue to keep our radar on high alert for them. Plowing, planting, seeding trays, it's an exciting time of year as everyone is getting revved up for Spring crops and harvests.
All went just great this week for orders: to save on packaging we sent the wonderful Miles Berry Strawberries in quart containers when it made sense (instead of two plastic pints). All of our clamshell packaging is recycled content and recyclable. They also make great containers for salad leftovers or to keep vegetables that have been prepped ahead for meals. We try to re-use any plastic packaging at least a couple of times before putting it in the recycle bin! We had a good response to the addition of a few selected USA Certified USDA Organic produce items: Red and Yellow Sweet Onions and Meyer Lemons are flavors we really enjoy but can be hard to find. We'll continue to have a few special "From Further Afield" fruits and vegetables when we can find them!
New Supper Club Dates Our February Farmhouse Supper Club was really terrific! We have the next set of dates ready if you want to put in your Reservations now: Sunday April 9th and Mothers Day Sunday May 14th.
Pickup Location Changes
We know a lot of you are waiting to hear about how the Pickup Locations did for this week: we need at least 10 orders per week to cover the costs of delivery and some sites have been very low for several months. Thank you to everyone who helped spread the word to friends and neighbors! In particular the East Cobb location got a big boost from Karin, Joan & John and Sue. Orders were way, way up this week and we will definitely continue deliveries to The Cooks Warehouse. Likewise All Saints' Episcopal and Smyrna's Grateful Bread Company had very impressive surges and a bunch of emails requesting to keep these sites. Unfortunately, Care USA, Atlanta Community Food Bank and Cox Enterprises just do not have enough Members to keep us coming every week. Each has another pickup site within a few miles so at least there are good options to still get Real Food from our Farmers!
Update on Decatur: we are working to finalize a new Pickup Location in Decatur! The farm events this last week did set us back a bit but we should have an announcement in the next week or two. Also, the new Cook's Warehouse that is opening in Chamblee will be added so stay tuned for info if you are in that neck of the woods.
Please don't think we don't still want your referrals! There are so many new e-ways to keep in touch with neighbors now so mention us in community or church bulletins, school newsletters and don't stop spreading the word to co-workers. Posting a review of us on Facebook is always very appreciated and a suggestion came in on the survey to forward our emails to friends who might be interested. Thank you!
Online Market Survey and "Cooler Item" Changes A big thank you to everyone who took a few moments to answer our quick survey. We learned a few things based on the responses:
- 70% told us they appreciate getting the Monday Order Reminder emails so those are back to stay. Too many emails for you? You can create a Folder in your Inbox for our incoming emails to automatically sort into - then you can view them when you like!
- 50% of the folks who answered let us know it would be fine to reduce packaging and the possibility of missing your Meat or Dairy items by including them in the main order box. We will make this change gradually: right now we have started putting Cheese and Butter in the boxes with a special label. This week we started packing other Dairy and Meat items in the box, with a cooler pack when necessary. For instance if your box goes into a walk-in at your Pickup Location we won't include a cooler pack (Avalon Catering, Miller Union, 5 Seasons Brewing, Sandy Springs, Smyrna).
- We got a variety of responses about our program, the new website and how happy folks are with what we do. This only helps us to step it up and work harder for your support!

Weekly Recipe: Mixed Root Gratin
 |
| | We used Potatoes, White and Orange Sweet Potatoes and Rutabagas. |
Each week we highlight
some of the ingredients from our boxes with one of our own Farmhouse Recipes. This is the way we cook here on the Farm with our limited kitchen time but love of Good Food. We hope to inspire you to try something new, even if it's just one All-Local Meal a week! The Full Recipe is in the Wednesday Weekly Newsletter.
|
We served this as one of the sides for our February Farmhouse Supper Club and it's always a hit whenever we make it. The texture and flavors change depending on which seasonal Roots we have available. Our version is also gluten-free! This gets better then next day so be sure to make enough to take for lunch and make your co-workers jealous.
1. Wash, trim and thinly slice 4-5 Root vegetables (you want 4 cups prepped). You can cut them thicker for a rustic texture or very thinly on a mandolin for a fancier effect. 2. Melt 1 Tablespoon Butter in the bottom of a covered baking dish. 3. Layer the Roots, arranging one kind at a time or mix it up. This is a really fun side dish for kids to help with! 4. Mix together in a bowl 1 cup Cream or Half and Half, salt and pepper to taste and a dash of seasoning such as paprika. 5. Melt another Tablespoon of Butter and drizzle over the top of the top layer of Roots. Pour the Cream mixture over all and top with 1/4 cup grated Cheese (we like Red Hill Cheddar for this).
Cover and back at 350 degrees for one hour. Allow to rest for 30 minutes before serving. Clean-up tip: we keep a decorative jar of baking soda on the windowsill above the kitchen sink. If a baked-on dish comes out of the dishwasher with a "ring of remembrance" still on the edges it's a snap to polish it off with a few pinches of soda and your fingertips. Try it, it's super easy!
