Our Orders This Week
Our $20 Farmer Pick Box.
OK we packed some REALLY beautiful boxes this week, we know everyone is going to be thrilled when you open them up! We only had one problem when the Cilantro did not arrive from Rise 'n Shine Farm so we sent a larger order of Pac Choi for $30 and $40 Farmer Picks. If you ordered Cilantro as a Custom or Add-On item we'll credit your next order and our apologies for the disappointment! We did have more of the wonderful Cherry Tomatoes than expected so we put them into the Dinner Packages instead of Slicing Tomatoes for the Salad, hope everyone was glad about that, they are likely the last ones for the year.

Farmyard Updates: Kids!
We're happy to announce the first of the 2016 Baby Goats have been born! Those of you who follow us on our Facebook Page got the news even as Baby Girl was going into labor. She surprised us with twins, usually it's just one for the first time. She had a boy (above) who is the  spitting image of Daddy Larry and a cute-as-a-button little girl (below) she looks like a puppy dog, doesn't she? Mama is doing a great job. As we worked on the Newsletter today our Mama Goat Frida was showing all the signs that she is going to be next in line to have her babies so stay tuned!

New Website Updates
This week we were able to print our box labels again (yay!) so you will see the pretty new ones when you pickup with your Member Name nice and big, easy to read. Our Packing Slips are slimmed down and so much easier for us to read when we are packing orders (we had some difficulties with them the first couple of weeks!). Many thanks to our Members who asked for some refinements: you will now find a quicker "Add To Cart" function so it's easier to navigate while shopping. Let us know if you see anything that needs tweaking and we appreciate your input! We still have a few things we're working on: our customer account notes didn't transfer over so if we owed you an item don't hesitate to put a Comment on there to remind us, we're working on this. If you have not yet logged in to your new account be sure to use the default password friends, then you can click on your Account Details to change. If your account is not found more than likely your Annual Membership was expired but send us an email and we'll look to be sure.

Some of the changes and updates you will find on the new Online Market include:
  • Our Farmer Pick Forecasts are listed on the Online Market so you can easily view them anytime.
  • Investment Accounts are now calculated on the site so you can always look up your balance when you login. Laurie is SO happy about this! Our Fall Investment Incentive is now on offer through November 19th, see link on the sidebar.
  • We will only send you two emails per week: the "Online Market is Open" and our "Weekly Newsletter". We have eliminated the Monday "Order Reminder" so don't forget to order by Midnight Monday!
  • While we have not raised product prices we have rounded up our Annual Membership Fee to $36 ($3 per month). This covers the cost of our boxes, labels and packaging.
  • Our Recipes are searchable by ingredient! We're still uploading more of them and photos, it will be easy to find great new ways to prepare and enjoy that delicious mystery vegetable.

Weekly Recipes
Each week we highlight some of the ingredients from our boxes with one of our own Farmhouse Recipes. This is the way we cook here on the Farm with our limited kitchen time but love of Good Food. We hope to inspire you to try something new, even if it's just one All-Local Meal a week!

We are celebrating Fall Vegetables with one of our favorite items that has become one of our signatures: Mixed Root Vegetables. We know you will love these recipes, they are sure to surprise the eaters at your table!

Mixed Mashed Roots
Mixed Mashed Roots
Wash, trim and chop a mix of Roots into similar-size chunks. For mashing we prefer to steam or boil them in a seasoned liquid such as Chicken or Vegetable broth. Steaming is nice because more nutrients are preserved and the texture and flavor is less watery. Cook veggies until tender, drain and reserve the liquid if you boiled them*. Mash with an old-fashioned masher until you get the texture you like. Season with salt and pepper before serving. *Use liquid from boiling for Gravy or Soup base.

Roasted Roots
One of our all-time standbys can be so versatile after you make the basic recipe. Wash, trim and chop Mixed Roots into bite-sized chunks. Toss with just enough Olive Oil to coat them evenly, season with salt and pepper. Place in a single layer on a lined baking sheet and roast in a 375 degree oven for 30-40 minutes (stir/turn halfway through roasting time). Serve as a side dish, chill with your favorite dressing for an alternative to plain old Potato Salad or use as a base for Soup: pulse in a food processor with Chicken or Vegetable broth, use enough to get the consistency you like. Will likes this soup very smooth and Laurie likes it a little chunky. You can get creative with the seasonings, too: try Curry Spices with Coconut Milk or Maple Syrup and Cardamom.

Mom's Chocolate Roots Cake
Our ringer: Laurie's Mom Linda developed this delicious cake that actually has our Mixed Roots in there! You would NEVER know Rutabagas, Sweet Potatoes and Turnips are what make the cake so moist (we have used lots of different roots, too). We hope you try this one, it's really good and healthy, too!

2 cups cooked pureed Root Vegetables (Turnips, Rutabagas, Sweet Potatoes, Beets, etc.)
2 cups All Purpose Flour
1.5 cups Sugar
1/2 cup Cocoa
1.5 teaspoons Baking Soda
3/4 teaspoon Salt
2 large Eggs
3/4 cup warm Coffee (or sub with Water)
1/4 cup Vegetable or Canola Oil
1 teaspoon Vanilla

Whisk dry ingredients until blended. In another bowl mix together wet ingredients, combine with dry ingredients. Bake in greased and floured cake pans at 350 degrees for 45 minutes or until toothpick comes out clean. Let this cake cool for 20 minutes in the pan before turning out. Dust with Powdered Sugar before serving.
