| Our $20 Farmer Pick box this week is so colorful this week. |
Such a pretty array of colors, shapes and flavors in this week's boxes! We did have a couple of changes in the final lineup: the DRY weather has stopped the Chanterelles again and we didn't have enough for $30 and $40 Farmer Picks so we swapped them with the Shiitakes (see sidebar). We can't remember when we last hoped a tropical storm would get as far inland as our place! Most of our farmers really need the rain. Also the cute little Summer Squash got picked down as far as possible but Signal Mountain Farm came in a little short so some folks got Sweet Potatoes in their Farmer Pick box instead. Custom Choice Orders always get priority so those folks got their Chanterelles and Squash for sure. If you are looking for something new to do with the delicious Delicata Squash from Riverview Farms, check out our suggestions! One tip: the skins are very thin and totally edible. The common name Delicata comes from the word "delicate" referring to the skin which is much like a baked potato but even thinner and kind of nutty tasting. When we were looking for their bio info (they were referenced in the US as early as the 1850's) we came across these two beautiful and delectable recipes: Baked Stuffed Squash and Roasted Squash Blossom. Let us know if you try them or how you prepare yours. |
| | Bonus items for Early Bird order-ers. |
We had some fun bonuses this week: for Early Bird order-ers we sent you a thank-you packet with one of our Moore Farms pens (the ones we give our chefs) and a bumper sticker (not just for bumpers!). Thanks again for ordering early, we appreciate it. Everyone who ordered this week got a copy of Taproot Magazine in their boxes. This lovely, thoughtful and inspiring publication picked our Online Market program to send complimentary copies for our Members, we hope you enjoy!

Weekly Recipes: Putting Up Produce Tips and Techniques
Save some of Summer's flavors to brighten up your Winter dishes. We'll share some of our favorite easy ways to add zip to gloomy day meals. 1. Save the Peppers Zips: one super easy way to put up extra Sweet Peppers for Winter Chili, Pasta Sauce or adding to other dishes is to wash whole Peppers, dry well. Place on a plate or cookie sheet in the freezer until solid. Store in a zip bag (be sure to write the date on it and use within 6 months). When you want some Pepper for your Pasta just pull them out and chop as you would a fresh one! This method keeps them from freezing together into a big chunk and is much easier to portion. 2. Tomatoes are winding down folks and there is nothing like the flavor of sun-ripened Summer Tomatoes in the Winter! We have used the same method as the Peppers above (the skins slip right off when you run the frozen Tomato under warm water). But another easy way to use them later is to wash, remove the stem and center core and blend the entire Tomato until pureed smooth. We will do this with 4-5 at a time, measure out 1 cup of pureed Tomato into zip bags and freeze. One great benefit of this method is that you get all the fiber of the skin and seeds but you don't even notice it in there (really!). 3. Squash for Later: don't have time to fully prepare the Delicata, Butternut or Spaghetti Squash this week? Wash the outside (to remove any residual dirt, etc.,) cut the Squash in half, place cut-side down on a lined baking sheet. Roast in a 350 degree oven for 30 minutes or until just tender. Remove from oven and allow to cool. Scoop out the flesh and freeze in zip bags for quick meals like soups, baked side dishes or add to satisfying meals such as Vegetable Curry.
