Yummy Late Summer Orders
Our $20 Farmer Pick this week has a great variety!
So we know we're changing seasons when we truly come to the end of a crop and two hit us this week: Blueberries are done (but what a great run!) and the last of the wonderful Sweet Corn ended up with a smaller harvest than expected. As a result we decided to give everyone just two ears of Corn and a small bag (1 pound) of Potatoes instead of the planned 4 Corn ears. We didn't quite have enough at any rate (you all ordered a LOT this week!) so some folks got combinations of a full order of Potatoes (2 pounds) and Apples in place of Sweet Corn and some of the Baking Squash. We hope everyone is happy with the substitutions, we had a lot of last-minute orders flood in on Tuesday so the Squash didn't go as far as we thought it would. A note about the Baking Squash: these are heirloom Patty Pan varieties that traditionally were grown to storage size. They remain tender and sweet and are terrific fried, sauteed, stewed in Asian or Thai sauces, stuffed and baked (as you would Stuffed Peppers) or grated and used for baking (see Laurie's mother's recipe below). Keep them in the refrigerator for best results if you don't use them right away. We hope you enjoy them! Laurie's favorite way is to simply wash and trim the stem and bottom ends, slice in 3/4" "steaks" saute in butter, seasoned with salt and pepper. All of this late Summer rain from the Gulf storm should bring on lots of Wild Mushrooms and Laurie is now a certified forager! If we have a good flush we will offer Chanterelles and other mushrooms at market on Saturday and on the Online Market next week. Fingers crossed!

The five little piggies are a cross of three heritage breeds.
We had the pleasure of welcoming five new Farmyard residents here at Moore Farms last week: these little Piggies are doing a great job already performing their natural "Mother Nature's Tiller" job! Out of 30 shots this was just about the only one in focus, these little guys are really wiggly. They are only eight weeks old, make your reservations ASAP for our Farmhouse Supper Club so you can come out to visit them (and us!).

We wanted to share this pretty picture, our edible Sunflower Petals are garnishing beautiful plates of food at both Saltyard and
The Farmhouse at Serenbe this week!

Farmhouse Supper Club Fall Dates are Open!

If you haven't made the journey to Moore Farms from the big city we know you will enjoy both the lovely drive and spending a day with us in our native environment. We have switched to Sundays to make it easier for folks to unwind a bit and relax in the country.
Our last three Farmhouse Supper Club dates for this year are now set and reservations are open. We sold out almost every date for Spring and Summer so don't wait too long if you want to sign up. Fellas: we have DirecTv here at the Farm so if it's an important football day we'll have the game on in the sitting room! ; )

Weekly Recipe: Granny Linda's Summer Squash Spice Bread
The Baking Squash included in this week's Farmer Picks are perfect for stuffing with your favorite innards (we had our Recipe a couple of weeks ago) OR grate those babies up and make this easy quick bread. Laurie's mom is known for her Zucchini Bread and we're super thrilled to share her previously secret recipe (with a new title!). Best made with Pecan Point Farm Shelled Pecans! ; )

Preheat oven to 350 F
4 large eggs
1 1/2 c. organic brown sugar
3/4 c. vegetable oil
2 t. finely grated orange or lemon zest

3 c. unsifted, unbleached flour
1 1/2 t. baking soda
1 1/2 t. baking powder
3/4 t. salt
2 t. cinnamon
1/4 t. ground cloves
1/4 t. allspice
1/4 t. ground mace
1/4 t, ground ginger
1/4 t. powdered star anise
1/4 t. ground or freshly grated nutmeg
Add more or less of the spices according to your taste, and any additional ones that you have in your pantry!

2 c. grated, unpeeled summer squash, including zucchini, yellow squash, etc.  Hint:  I grate on the 1/8" holes on my grater, and include the seeds if they are small.  Do not drain the juice, stir it into the grated squash before measuring and before adding to dry ingredients.

1 c. coarsely chopped pecans or walnuts
1 c. organic raisins or cranberries, cherries, etc.
1 t. vanilla extract

Beat eggs to combine.
Gradually beat in the sugar.
Add oil and grated orange or lemon zest.

In separate bowl, whisk dry ingredients to thoroughly combine.  Add to egg mixture alternately with the squash. Stir in the nuts, raisins and vanilla.
Pour batter into greased and floured pan(s).  I use 3,  7 1/2" x 3 1/2" x 2 1/4" pans, but you can use a larger loaf pan, 9" tube pan or muffin pans.

Bake for 45 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center of loaves comes out clean.  Adjust time for muffins (less) or larger pans (more).

Let stand for 10 minutes before removing from pan(s) and cool thoroughly on a wire rack.

Note:  You can substitute 2 c. unpeeled, chopped apples for the squash in this recipe.  I have also added wheat germ and flax seeds -- about 1 T. , more or less, of each.  Have fun experimenting with flavors and textures! ~Linda
