| Our first $20 Farmer Pick box of Spring 2016 - a beauty! |
So Spring officially arrived this Sunday! It's been a lovely Winter overall and none of our farmers are complaining (except some who wish we had more cold to dampen a few more bugs). Strawberries are rocking and rolling and we have been thrilled to get them fresh from the fields of Miles Berry Farm in Baxley GA. This is a great sign for a good fruit year and we have been able to put double orders in the boxes for everyone again this week. The beautiful Broccoli Raab can be enjoyed lightly sauteed and it would be a great substitution for the Spinach in this week's recipe (see below). In general you can enjoy it as you would Spinach if you're looking for ideas and one of our favorite ways to use it is on pizza. The only shortage we had this week was with the Kale, some folks got an extra order of Spinach instead. We are very happy to welcome our new Pickup Location in Grant Park, hosted by Bennett's Market and Deli please help us spread the word!

Know Who Grows Your Food
| Some of the lucky Refugee Chickens basking in the Spring sunshine. |
So we have made it a goal to start highlighting our Local Food Producers in the Weekly Newsletters and this week we want you to meet Jackie Carr and her wonderful operation The Blind Lemon James Home for Wayward Chickens. Jackie has been accepting "stray" chickens and the leftover birds that don't get carted off from local confinement chicken operations for several years now. She has to teach them how to be chickens since they have spent their short lives locked up in factory chicken houses until they get to her refuge. Gradually they learn to run around outdoors, scratching in the dirt and grass and chasing bugs. We include Jackie's Chicken Eggs on our Online Market. Follow the gang on Facebook here!

Spring veggies make us want to enjoy them simply and in ways that highlight their fresh flavors. We combine Spinach and Shiitake Mushrooms for this easy recipe which you can prepare as Lasagne, Stuffed Canneloni or toss the ingredients with your favorite shapes of pasta. (You can also use Kale, Broccoli Raab or Swiss Chard for this delish dish!). We added Sausage but it is not necessary. This recipe serves two so just double for four servings. 1. In a skillet lightly brown 1/2 cup Sausage with 1/4 cup chopped Shiitake or other Mushrooms. 2. Cook 1/2 pound Pasta of your choice. 3. Turn off the heat and add 1 cup washed and roughly chopped or torn fresh Spinach, 1 clove crushed Garlic and 1/4 cup crumbled Asiago Cheese (Wright Dairy of course!). 4. Toss through with a touch more Olive Oil, season with salt and pepper before serving. Farmyard Mama Drama |
| | The Mama Duck on her nest. |
This is the second year that our Muscovy Duck Hen has decided to sit on a clutch of eggs to hatch them. She is such a pretty girl and is so dedicated we don't have the heart to stop her! So a few days ago she hatched the first of her six eggs which happened to be a Chicken egg (different hens will all contribute to a nest). The rest of the Duck Eggs will take up to a week longer to incubate so the little chick was by itself under her Duck Mama. Here is the drama part: we have another Chicken who has wanted to start sitting on a batch of eggs but she has not been consistent on a nest so we don't let her (we gather them every day). This

morning she literally moved in on the Mama Duck's nest! She just crowded right inthere with the Duck, the little chick and the other eggs. Needless to say Mama Duck was NOT happy and she got up and started strutting around the Farmyard peeping and fussing, making a real scene. In the end it turned out to be a good thing: we couldn't really leave the Chicken Chick with Mama Duck because eventually she would take her Ducklings into the pond and, well, Chicken Chicks don't swim! We set up Miss Mama Chicken with the little baby in her own yard with a new nest so she could have a baby for herself! Farmhouse Supper Club
