Moore Farms
Our Online Market Orders for This Week
$20 Farmer Pick order for this week!
It's always a relief when we reach the end of our weekly cycle, the orders are all packed and being delivered and we're talking to our farmers about what they will have for next week. Everything went really well with all of our items, we were a little short on Tuscan Kale so we sent the Green Kale substituted by the farm and for a few of the Wednesday deliveries we were short on Blackberries so we sent a Blueberry and a Cherry in place (no worries for Thursday orders! The farm sent another delivery today for tomorrow's boxes.) Just a reminder to order early! Every week we have several folks who call/email after we close, hoping to still get a box. Pretty much we can't, sorry! We have three web systems to shut down and once we have our final tabulations it throws everything off if we open everything back up again to add another order. Order early! : )

We're very happy to announce we have added a way to accept payments via PayPal! Quite of few Members have asked for this and the payment function is now "on". It's not the automatically configured link to the PayPal website you may be familiar with: when you checkout on our Online Market and choose the "PayPal payment pending" option our site will allow you to complete your order. Then you still have to go to your PayPal account to send us the payment. You have 24 hours or your order will automatically cancel from the system. Best to copy/paste our email address! We had a few folks who had trouble this week because they entered our email address incorrectly.

A Tale of Two Hens
Our two Mama Hens are very serious about their job!
OK, a background note - an adult female Chicken is called a Hen, so is an adult female Duck. The story goes thusly: A few weeks ago we noticed a Duck who had started sitting on a nest of Eggs. Duck Hens can be particularly difficult to dissuade from nesting as they have a very strong maternal instinct. Over the next few days, different Hens (both Chicken and Duck) contributed their eggs to the nest so that there was about a dozen that she was sitting on! This is not unusual and often a Mama Hen will have mixed ducklings and chicks in their brood. Next, we saw one Chicken Hen who appeared to have moved in on the Duck Hen's nest! She would not get up off of the eggs. So the Duck Hen prepared another nest, right next to her! We have watched them in fascination as they steal the other's eggs back and forth! Right now they both have about 15 eggs each. They made their nests under the layer boxes so they are protected and out of the way. The picture isn't great due to the low light in there but you get the idea. Stay tuned for more news from our Tale of Two Hens!

Weekly Recipe
Our Recipe of the Week is for Miller Union's
Puree of Summer Squash Soup
This delicate soup will surely become one of your favorites, too! It's an elegant way to celebrate Laurie's favorite vegetable. Many thanks to Chef Steven Satterfield for letting us share the recipe with our Members!
  • 2 cups chopped Vidalia onion

  • 8 cups young summer squash (zephyr, crookneck, or other tender, young variety), washed and chopped

  • 6 tablespoons unsalted butter

  • 4 cups chicken broth or water

  • Kosher salt to taste

  • Freshly ground black pepper to taste

  • A few gratings of fresh nutmeg

In a sauce pot, heat the butter until foamy and add the vidalias.  Season the onions lightly with salt and pepper and sauté for several minutes until translucent, being careful not to brown them.  Add the squash to the pot and season lightly with salt and pepper.  Stir well to coat and sauté for a few minutes to release the juices and flavor from the squash into the pot.  Add the chicken broth or water, just enough to come below the top of the vegetables in the pot.  Simmer until squash is tender.  Transfer in batches to a blender and blend until smooth.  Serve hot with a grating of fresh nutmeg across the top of the soup. Serves 8
