Moore Farms
Our Orders This Week
Wow what a great $20 Farmers Pick box this week!
So, sometimes we get surprises from the farms we work with and this week we had a couple! Instead of twenty cases of Butterhead Lettuce we got two. Instead of Florida Oranges we got Florida Tangerines. Thankfully we were able to call up our friends at PodPonics and got a last-minute order from them for their great Mixed Lettuces and we had enough Tangerines to replace the Oranges in Farmers Pick Orders! Custom Orders for Butterhead Lettuce were filled as planned and we hope our Members enjoy the Mixed Lettuce replacement. If you had Oranges added on to your order we will note your account to automatically replace or credit next time (no need to re-order them unless you want extra!). For our Fruit Only Boxes we substituted with another Grapefruit and two extra Tangerines. We're still hearing that the Florida Oranges will be available for another week or two, yay! All else went terrific for boxes this week and with the gorgeous weather we have been working our tails off on the farm.

Baby Goat Name Vote Results!
Our Baby Goat Alejandro

OK the votes are all in and tallied and we are happy to announce Frida's little buckling will now be known as "Alejandro"! His name was sent in by Member Laurie Teaman and inspired by young Frida Kahlo's boyfriend and mentor. It was a tight race as "Buster" (suggested by Member Helen Andrasko) and "Friday" (sent in by Member Terry Schwartz) were close second and third names. Many thanks to everyone for your nominations and votes!

New Farmyard Residents
Check out the newest additions to the Moore Farms Farmyard!
These two handsome fellows came to Moore Farms via Chef Dave Larkworthy's family (5 Seasons Brewing). Their batch of Silkie chicks turned out to include two roosters and, well,
"Twilight" visiting the Speckled Sussex Hens
eventually they needed to find a new home. Silkies are SO cute! They have fine feathers that are almost like fur and they go all the way down their legs so it looks like they are wearing furry pants! They are the first of this type of chicken breed that we have had at the farm. We set them up in their own section of the Farmyard with four handpicked Hens to keep them company. We chose girls that are white and black so maybe we'll have some super cool Baby Chicks later this year! Right now they are all getting settled in to their new house and getting to know each other. Funny thing, we have not heard them crow yet!
"Shmoo" is more of a homebody, he hangs out in the new house a lot.

From the Farmers
We are very proud to bring our farm harvests to your family's table and we always want to know what you think about what we do. Send us your recipes, pictures and stories and thank you for supporting your local food system!

Weekly Recipe
Johnny Cakes
w/ Strawberry Sauce

I guess we just have Brunch on the brain this week, the nutty crispy texture of these Cornmeal Pancakes contrast wonderfully with the fresh sweet Strawberries.

Cornmeal Pancakes (Johnny Cakes) makes about (12) 4-inch pancakes

1. Measure 1 cup Cornmeal and place in heat-proof bowl. Add 1 teaspoon salt, 1 Tablespoon Sugar, mix together.

2. Add 1 cup boiling water to Cornmeal, mix together and cover with a plate or lid. Let stand for 10 minutes.

3. In another small bowl beat together 1 Egg, 1/2 cup Milk, 2 Tablespoons melted Butter.

4. Sift together 1/2 cup All Purpose Flour and 2 teaspoons Baking Powder.

5. In a larger mixing bowl combine Cornmeal and Egg mixtures until smooth. Add Flour mixture and stir just to combine, do not beat or mix together too much: just enough to blend the batter.

6. Spoon out 1/4 cup measures of batter onto hot buttered griddle, brown on both sides and serve with Butter, Syrup or Fresh Strawberry Sauce.

Strawberry Sauce
Wash, trim and mash 1 pint Fresh Strawberries with a fork. Add 1-2 teaspoons Sugar or Honey. Continue mashing until desired consistency, we like to leave this sauce a little chunky but you can also puree it in a blender. Refrigerate until enjoying with Johnny Cakes, Yogurt or Ice Cream.
