Our Orders This Week
Our $20 Farmers Pick Box this week
So another lovely week of farm harvests as we run smack back into Winter Weather again.  The Pink Beauty Radishes from Rise and Shine Farm are so tasty, crunchy and pretty! If you're not a fan of Radishes try them in some new ways: think of using them any way you would Carrots. Cooked or raw they are yummy and good for you! Same goes with the Asian White Turnips: they are fantastic raw, if you have not added them to a salad you're missing out on a delicious ingredient. Of course they are wonderful for stir fry dishes, simply sauteed or in the Mixed Mashed Roots recipe below. We did have one item we were a little short on this week: Ups and Downs Farm did not have quite as much Arugula as they originally reported so for the Dinner Packages, Soup & Salad Boxes and a few Farmer Pick orders we substituted with an Arugula/Spinach mix, perfect for salad or sandwiches!

New Farmyard Critters
One of the Speckled Sussex Hens
If you didn't see our Facebook posts this week we have made some new additions to the Farmyard. Our local East Alabama Goat and Poultry Auction draws farmers from Alabama and Georgia to buy and sell small livestock. This past weekend we found a few new friends to bring home to Moore Farms. Our new Speckled Sussex Chickens are so pretty! This heritage breed has been on our wish list for some time. Now we have two breeding pairs so we are looking forward to hatching some Speckled Sussex Baby Chicks this Spring! Since our Fall Chick Hatch was not as successful as we would have liked we found three dozen Baby Chicks at the Auction, too. They are Buff Orpington, Dominecker-Buff Orpington cross and New Hampshire
Mama Duck with some of her large new family
Reds. Then our good friends from Hollyholm Farm brought us a Mama Muscovy Duck with her three Baby Ducklings! We ended up putting the Mama Duck and her babies right in the brooderhouse with the Baby Chicks. Now she is the Mama to ALL of them! It's the sweetest thing, they all snuggle up under, around and on top of her. We'll have more New Farm Critter bios in next week's Newsletter, we have a couple more newbies to show everyone!

Vote for our Baby Goat's Name!
Well, we ended up cancelling Fall Farm Day this year due to yucky weather so we did not have our customary vote for the new Baby Goat's name. Many thanks to everyone who sent suggestions, we have set up an online voting to make it easier for folks (and us, too!). Mama Josephine has been taking good care of her Baby and she is growing fast. Now we just need to know what to call her: vote for her name when you place your Online Market order. We'll leave the ballot open for one more week so everyone has a chance to vote and we'll have her name for Christmas. Here are the front-runners so far: we now have a three-way tie with Toffee, Niblet and Francesque; Grace is right in there and Espresso is still in the running. Vote for the name you like when you place your order next week and we'll announce the winning name in the Weekly Newsletter and on our Facebook page!

December Delivery Schedule
Since the end-of-the-year Holidays land on our normal delivery days we'll be off for two weeks this year. Orders will be available for delivery for the first three weeks of December then we'll be back for the first full week of January. Whew, 2014!!!
From the Farmers
We are very proud to bring our farm harvests to your family's table and we always want to know what you think about what we do. Send us your recipes, pictures and stories and thank you for supporting your local food system!

Weekly Recipe
Mixed Mashed Roots
If you haven't tried our Mixed Roots this way we think you'll be surprised at how tasty they are. Most folks don't realize how many different kinds of Roots are in there: perfect for picky kids and spouses! They are one of the sides for all three of our Dinner Packages this week and include some or all of the following: Asian Turnips; Carrots; Black Radishes; Potatoes and Sweet Potatoes.

1. Prepare Roots: Wash, trim and peel if necessary. The Black Radishes usually are better peeled for this dish (FYI if you are grating them for a salad they don't have to be peeled).

2. Chop Roots into 1-2" chunks, place in a cooking pot and cover with water. Season with salt and pepper, bring to a boil and simmer for 10-15 minutes or until Roots are fork-tender.

3. If you like you can add a chopped Onion about half way through cooking.

4. Drain Roots and return to the cooking pot. Add 1Tbls Butter, 1Tbls Cream, Milk or Broth. Mash Roots with a potato masher to the consistency or your liking. Sometimes we prepare them chunkier, sometimes smoother.

5. Check for seasoning and add salt and pepper to your taste before serving.
