Moore Farms
Our Terrific Fall Orders
Yum, our $20 Farmers Pick order this week!
OK now it really feels like the seasons are changing and the mixture of harvests from our farms is getting a lot more variety! We were able to include a beautiful head of Field Lettuce from Rise and Shine Farm for our $30 and $40 Farmers Picks this week instead of a second Hydroponic Bibb Lettuce. Radishes were a few different varieties: the pretty multi-colored Easter Egg, lovely French Breakfast and the Pink Shunkyos, too. Busy time on the farms as we are planting new beds and clearing old ones, getting the farmhouse ready for the predicted cold snap and making Muscadine Preserves and Basil Pesto this weekend!

Josephine the Mama Goat Update: as of 1pm on Wednesday she is napping in the farmyard, still no active signs of kidding but her udder is really full now so she is ready to have that Baby Goat at any moment (still!).
From the Farmers
We are very proud to bring our farm harvests to your family's table and we always want to know what you think about what we do. Send us your recipes, pictures and stories and thank you for supporting your local food system!

Weekly Recipe
If you're interested in trying your hand at preserves or if you're an experienced canner, Muscadine Preserves are really tasty and make an excellent holiday gift. This just makes a small test batch, add more fruit for more jars of preserves. So good on a hot buttered biscuit on a cold morning and they are really easy to make, too!

Easy Muscadine Preserves

   1. Remove stems from 1 pint muscadines, rinse well.

   2. Cut grapes in half, remove seeds.

Chop fruit into bits, measure how much you have (should be 1-1.5 cups per pint). Place in a pan with 1/2 cup water.

   3. Simmer for 15-20 minutes until tender, stirring occasionally and adding more water if necessary to prevent sticking.

   4. Add 3/4 cup sugar for each cup of fruit and bring to a boil. Add a pinch of salt. Cook at a "large simmer" or "low boil" for 15-20 minutes, until thickened. (Keep stirring as the preserves thicken to prevent sticking.)

   5. Carefully pour into hot sterilized jars, leave ¼-inch head space. Carefully wipe jar mouths with a clean wet towel and screw on seals and rings.
   6. Process in a boiling water bath for 15 minutes to preserve for up to a year or keep unprocessed jars in the refrigerator for up to 4 weeks.
