Our First Fall Orders

Our yummy $20 Farmer's Pick box this week.
|
Just a great week of Good Food this week as we race into the next season. New harvests are coming in now with Greens back on the menu (yay!) and lovely tasty treats such as Ups and Downs Farm's beautiful Arugula. We're happy to report that all went well with the farm deliveries, no missing items, we love that! The cooler weather is so rejuvenating for us as we till, plow, plan and plant for the next few months. Remember, our growers work year-round to produce their wonderful food so your family can enjoy local meals every week of the year! ___________________________________________
Farm Pics: Baby Chicks and Still Pregger Josephine!
 |
Our nine Baby Chicks at Moore Farms are growing fast! Here they are eating kitchen scraps in their new Chicken Run we built with landscaping pallets donated by Members Danny and Sandy Perry. Backyard Chickens are getting more and more popular in the city. We are happy to share our experience and help source birds, build coops, etc., and if you're interested, check out the Urban Coop Tour this weekend hosted by the Wylde Center at Oakhurst Garden. http://wyldecenter.org/events/urban-coop-tour/

 | We are STILL on Baby Goat watch with Miss Josephine! Here she is in her private yard and her little house behind her. We wanted to give her some space from the Chickens, Ducks, Pigs and other Goats. So now it's just a matter of time, every morning I tell her it's a beautiful day to have a kid!

Weekly Recipe

We're getting to that time of year again when our popular Soup and Salad are starting back up! This first one of the Fall season features a Veggie Soup with Cornbread and Salad, great for lunch or dinner and the soup just gets better the next day!
Veggie Soup & Salad
Box includes: Saxon Mill Cornmeal; Tomatoes; Green Beans; Sweet Peppers; Mixed Roots; Summer Squash; Crowder Peas; Mixed Greens; Lettuce and Cucumbers. Feeds 2-4 folks for sure!
Cornbread
Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Mix together 1 cup Cornmeal, 1 cup All-Purpose Flour, 4 teaspoons Baking Powder, 1/8 cup Sugar, pinch of salt. In another bowl blend together 1 cup Milk (or Buttermilk) 1/2 cup light Olive Oil or Vegetable Oil
and two Eggs. Mix wet and dry ingredients, pour into an oiled cast iron skillet or buttered baking dish, bake for 20 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.
Summer Fall Vegetable Soup
Truly a celebration of flavors from the end of Summer and the start of Fall. . .
Wash, trim and chop a mix of Vegetables:
Tomatoes (reserve some for the Salad); Green Beans; Sweet Peppers (reserve some for the Salad); Mixed Roots (give a good scrub, no need to peel!); Summer Squash; Mixed Greens (reserve some for Salad).
Rinse and drain Crowder Peas.
In a soup pot heat 2 Tablespoons Olive Oil, add all of the prepared Vegetables, season with salt and pepper and saute until they are just starting to brown. Pour in 8 cups broth or water, turn heat to medium and cover. Simmer for 20-30 minutes, stirring occasionally. Turn heat up to medium-high until soup comes to a boil, cook uncovered for 10 minutes or until desired consistency. Check for seasoning before serving with Salad and Cornbread.
Summer Fall Salad
Trim and wash Lettuce and a selection of the Mixed Greens. Arrange on serving plates and top with chopped fresh Vegetables (Tomatoes, Sweet Peppers and Cucumbers). Enjoy with just a dash of salt and pepper or drizzle with your favorite Salad Dressing.
