Our terrific $20 Farmers Pick with our surprise Lettuce Mix!
|
Alrighty then, another really nice week as our group of farmers have finally been able to get some mowing, tilling and plowing done. Just in the nick of time, too as we got another 1.5 inches here at our place this weekend. All went well with orders for everyone, we did have a surprise from our Hydroponic Lettuce producer, the fine folks at Pod Ponics in Atlanta. Somehow we ended up with their really wonderful Lettuce Mix instead of the Butterhead we had expected! We hope everyone enjoys this special treat, it's the first time we have seen this new Lettuce package form them and hope to have more in the future.
For everyone who ordered our Chicken Dinner Package here is the link to the brine recipe we found from by Martha Stewart. It uses the Herb/Spice Mix we included in the boxes (Fresh Bay Leaves, Dried Coriander Seed and Fresh Oregano). Her recipe was for Pork but the brine itself is perfect for Poultry. We recommend Roasting the Potatoes, Sauteing the Green Beans and Slicing the Tomatoes for a perfect Summer Supper! _______________________New Farmyard Friends
 |
This picture shows three of the Muscovies, two Pekins, one of the Runners and the Welsh Harlequin all hanging out together!
|
We were happy to welcome several new birds to the farmyard in the last few weeks! Our good friends at Hollyholm Farm shared a dozen of their Chocolate Muscovy Ducks with us. They had a Duck Hen who hid a nest from them and hatched them out as a surprise! We're glad to have them here as they joined our White Pekins. We also brought home four Chocolate Runner Ducks and one Welsh Harlequin. They were raised from day-old ducklings by our friends and Members Danny, Sandy and Will Perry. The Runners are especially cute and funny: they stand straight upright and run around together in a group! The Ducks will lay Eggs for us when they are old enough and they all live together in the Farmyard with the Chickens, Goats and Pigs.

Our week-old Baby Chicks.
|
We also welcomed nine new Baby Chicks last week! They hatched from eggs we gathered from our own Chickens and incubated indoors. Because we have so many different Chicken breeds the Baby Chicks all have different colors and markings. They will live in their incubator box for another week or so before they can move into their new home with the rest of the farm animals. Then they will have their own special little house for several weeks until they are big enough to mingle with the rest of the crowd full time. Can you pick out all nine Baby Chicks in this picture?

Our Recipes this week are for our Veggie Dinner Package
Farmhouse Veggie Plate
Will made this tasty Dinner Plate we hope you enjoy it, too! Baked Cheesy Tomatoes
Wash, trim and slice Roma Tomatoes in half and remove seeds. Place in a baking dish that has been wiped with a little oil to keep from sticking. Grate Wanda Cheese, set aside. Make 1/2 cup bread crumbs (pulse 1 slice bread in food processor) mix with 2Tablespoons Olive Oil, salt and pepper. Mix Cheese with Bread Crumbs, sprinkle over Roma Tomatoes and Bake at 350 degrees for 10 minutes.
Roasted 'TatersWash, trim and cut Potatoes into chunks. Place in a bowl and toss with just enough Olive Oil to coat, season with salt and pepper. Place on a lined baking sheet, roast at 350 degrees for 15-20 minutes or until browned.
Beans & PeppersWash and trim Green Beans, we like to prepare them whole but you can slice or chop as you like. Wash, trim and slice Sweet Pepper. In a skillet or saute pan heat 2 Tablespoons Olive Oil and saute Beans and Peppers, season with salt and pepper. Cover and remove from heat 'til the rest of the plate is ready.
Stovetop Grilled Squash
This is Will's method for getting the same texture as grilled Squash but without firing up the grill! Wash, trim and slice Squash. Heat an iron skillet with 1 Tablespoon Olive Oil over medium high heat. Place Squash slices in skillet in a single layer and cook until they get a good sear on each side.
