Beautiful Boxes This Week
Our $20 Farmers Pick box this week.
Sometimes the variety from our group of Farmers is just so striking! This week the Produce colors are a rainbow, gorgeous. We had one mis-communication with the farm which resulted in us getting Green Kale instead of Tuscan Kale in our delivery, we went ahead and sent it out for folks who ordered. Hopefully it will work just the same in your recipes though if anyone is very un-pleased just let us know and we'll make it up to you! There are quite a few different types of Kale and while we like the Tuscan Kale best they are all wonderful.

So the two Items in this week's orders that are unusual are the tasty Florida Lychee Fruits and the Cabbage Cousin
Lychees
Fresh Lychees are really hard to find and so much better than the preserved ones!
Kohlrabi. Both kind of require a little info in case you're not already familiar with them. . . The Lychee Fruits are a tropical grown Organically for us in Florida but they originate in Asia. You will see them often on the the salad bar at Asian restaurants, they are kind of like fruit cocktail. The preserved ones are nice but the fresh ones are really, really good! The flavor is more like Pineapple or Mango with a texture kind of like Grapes. To enjoy: peel the outer skin off and eat the sweet fruit inside. They do have seeds or pits so be sure to remove them for kids!

Kohlrabi is one of those Vegetables that folks really like once they get to know it. Great both raw or cooked, it makes a surprising addition to a crudite plate (how about with some of the new Atlanta Fresh Cream Cheese to dip them in?). Cooked, they turn into a whole other vegetable: kind of like Turnips or Cabbage in flavor but sweeter. You can use the leaves like you would Kale or Chard and while most folks peel the "bulb" you don't have to. Check out our Recipes for Kohlrabi this week and get to know this great Veggie!
Kohlrabi Schnitzel
Schnitzel seems to be all the rage these days with entire restaurants devoted to this thin fried style of preparing (usually) meats. We first enjoyed Kohlrabi Schnitzel at the late great Dynamic Dish in Atlanta and we have kept it on our Farmhouse Menu ever since.

1. Slice peeled Kohlrabi into 1/4" thick rounds.
2. Dip in beaten Egg.
3. Coat with seasoned (salt and pepper) Bread Crumbs.
4. Fry in Vegetable or other light frying oil until crispy and brown.

These can be made a short time ahead but are best served quickly so the breading doesn't get soggy. We like these as an appetizer.

Kohlrabi Gratin
Will reminded me about this one after I sent out the email this week, we love this special (not everyday) dish!
     1. Wash, trim and slice Kohlrabi and Vidalia Onion very thinly (a mandolin works well for this). Note: you can add other Vegetables if you like, we have also used Turnips, Potatoes, Sweet Potatoes and Rutabagas.
     2. Layer Sliced Vegetables in a buttered baking dish sprinkling each layer with a little bit of flour, grated cheese, salt and pepper. Top last layer with cheese.
     3. Drizzle top with 1/2 - 1 cup Heavy Cream or Half and Half, use less for a small dish and more for a larger dish. Cream will soak down into the layers. Cover with lid or foil.
     4. Bake at  350 degrees for 30-45 minutes until bubbly. Remove cover and brown top. Allow to rest for 10 minutes before serving.
