Moore Farms
Our Orders This Week
Our beauty $20 Farmers Pick for this week.
We just had one substitution this week: we did not receive as much Tuscan Kale as we had expected from the farmers so we replaced it with Swiss Chard for some of the Farmer's Pick Orders (if you had Tuscan Kale on your Custom Choice order or as an Add-On Item we made sure you got it!). Lovely, lovely harvests coming in from farmers in our Southeast Region right now. We're looking at the Florida Citrus tailing off so just another week or two for these wonderful fruits we enjoy so much during the winter. We managed to get some soil cultivated this past weekend before the next deluge of rain came down, so far we're not too far behind but we were glad for the one-week break in precipitation. Lots of Fall-planted vegetables growing on in the field, will be picking lots of Greens and Roots for the next several weeks. Our Spinach here at Moore Farms suffered from a devastating visit by Peter Rabbit, it's the only thing in the whole field he and his buddies devoured. Such are the trials of farm life, it's always something new!

Atlanta Pickup Locations Update
Our GA Tech site is suspended for the time being due to construction, folks can pickup at Miller Union and we're actively working on another on-campus site.
Interested in a Glenwood Park site? We're getting requests for a location over there, let us know!
We'll keep ya'll updated on weekly orders for these Pickup Locations that are in danger of being suspended or replaced. We really need at least 10 orders per week to cover delivery costs.
  • Simply Fresh Marietta/Roswell (no orders this week)
  • Harry's Market Marietta (three orders this week)
  • Stone Mountain Village (five orders this week)
  • Mother Nature's in Tucker (two orders this week)

Click here to view the details for our Pickup Locations and let us know if you want to keep your site by ordering and spreading the word!! We'll make some decisions at the end of March about replacement locations as we are getting requests for new sites in the Atlanta area.

Sights and Sounds of Spring
Pretty Peach Blossoms
It's always amazing when Mother Nature heralds her changing seasons! For the last week or so we have heard a chorus of different birds here on the farm, many migrating North, most we never actually see, but their songs fill the air with the announcement of Spring. The Peach Blossoms burst out this past weekend, a little early but so beautiful! At night the Tree Frogs have begun their songs, they will keep it up until Fall, a beautiful whistling and peeping choir that lets us know all is well in the woods. Forsythia, Camelias, Daffodils and lots of different Wildflowers have sprung open, suddenly  giving us a pallette of color. Even the wind rustling the tree branches can sound so loud right now, without the muffle of leaves. The color of Spring Green is such a vibrant lime hue, it almost glows in the moonlight. What Sights and Sounds of Spring do you see and hear where you live?
Chicken Party at Moore Farms

This weekend we tilled up a section of the "Chicken Salad Bar". We plant this area with Clover and Rye Grass in rotation for the Chickens and Ducks. This gives them a regular supply of fresh Greens to eat, even in the Winter. After we tilled the soil we let them have a "Chicken Party" scratching around in the earth for worms and bugs (their favorite treats). The next day, just before the rain came, we broadcast the Clover and Rye seeds and closed the section off. After the seeds germinate and grow for a few weeks we will open it back up again so they have a fresh new "Chicken Salad Bar". Click on the picture above to see a short video of the "Chicken Party"!
From the Farmers
We are very proud to bring our farm harvests to your family's table and we always want to know what you think about what we do. Send us your recipes, pictures and stories and thank you for supporting your local food system!

Grits & Greens Casserole
I first had this dish many years ago at a Garden Club luncheon in Roanoke, Alabama. I had just moved South from Michigan and the combination was wonderful!

Prepare Grits: Bring 2.5 cups water/broth (or mixture) to a boil in a covered saucepan. Slowly add 1 cup Grits, stir, reduce heat to low, season with salt and pepper, cover and cook for 40 minutes. Stir occasionally to be sure they are not sticking. Remove from heat and add 1/2 cup Cream or Milk and 1/4 cup Grated Cheese of your choice.

Prepare Greens: Wash, trim and chop Mixed Greens. Chop 1 medium Onion and 2-3 cloves Garlic if you like. Heat 2T Olive Oil in a skillet, add Onions, stir to heat through, add Greens and Garlic, stir just to wilt. Season* with salt and pepper, cover and reduce heat to low for 5 minutes.

Prepare a 9" square Casserole dish by oiling or buttering the bottom and sides.

Layer 1/2 of the Grits in the bottom, spread Greens on top and spread remaining Grits over all of the Greens. Bake for 20-30 minutes or until bubbly and browned.

*Add some Red Pepper flakes for a little heat!

Apple Strawberry Crisp for Dessert
This delectable dessert recipe is from our good friend and Packing Shed Crew Leader Jackie Carr. She is known for her pies and she often brings them in for lunch on order packing days!

Prepare Topping: Mix together 1 cup Rolled Oats, 1 cup Brown Sugar, 1 cup Flour. Cut in 1/2 cup Butter and mix well until texture is crumbly.

Butter a 9" Pie Pan lightly, press half of the Topping mixture into the  bottom of the pan to form a crust.

Wash, core, peel and slice 4-5 Apples and 1 pint Strawberries.
Mix fruit gently with 1/4 cup Sugar and 2 Tablespoons Flour.

Sprinkle remaining crumble Topping over fruit and bake at 350 degrees for 45 minutes. Serve with Ice Cream!
