Whew, whizzing toward the end of 2012 seems like lightening fast! We made it through Thanksgiving and the beautiful weather this weekend means a lot of planting, weeding and hopefully getting the large part of our current construction project, the addition to the WWOOFer cabin, completed. Farming means you also have to be a mechanic, plumber, carpenter, etc., as there is always some small or large job that is waiting for our attention. The Winter's other construction to-do list includes the final phase (finally!) of our Packing Shed expansion, Barn renovations and Chicken House roofing. Not to mention the two bathrooms in the Farmhouse need to be updated! Hopefully by Spring Farm Day we will have a lot of this done for Members to see. Many thanks again to our fantastic Investment Members who helped make it possible for us to get these project plans off of the to-do list and onto the be-doing list!
On to orders this week, all went very well and our Farmer's Pick boxes were bee-you-tee-ful. Mixed Roots this week were comprised of White Sweet Potatoes, Rutabagas, Purple Top Turnips, Potatoes, White Turnips and some Carrots. We're getting next week's Farm Forecasts in now and it's looking good for some cool new items so be on the lookout for tomorrow's "Online Market is Open" email for the details. Also we'll have two Member incentives going on for the month of December: Early Bird Buck (order by midnight Friday and get a buck off of your order!) and a $5 Refer-a-Friend Bonus (details will be in tomorrow's email).
WOW! There will only be three more ordering weeks for 2012: due to the calendar we will not have deliveries for the weeks of December 24th and December 31st!

Will's Irish Stew
Ingredients
- Vegetables: Cabbage; Kale; Potatoes; Onions; Turnips; Sweet Potatoes (or any combination as you like).
- One pound of Beef, Goat or Mutton Stew Meat for meat eaters.
- 1 bottle of Guinness Beer;
- salt, pepper.
The Recipe
Wash, trim and chop all vegetables to similar size pieces, we like 3/4 inches as a good bite-size.
In a large soup pot heat 2T olive or vegetable oil, add potatoes and turnips, saute on medium heat for 3-4 minutes.
Add remaining vegetables, sautee for a few minutes until veggies just starting to soften.
if preparing meat version remove the vegetables, add 2T olive or vegetable oil to the pot again and brown stew meat. Add vegetables back to cooking pot, season with salt and pepper, add 1 bottle Guinness beer and 4 cups water.
Simmer on medium heat for 45 minutes to one hour (this stew gets better if you cook it longer and Mutton will require a longer cooking time, too).
Serve with cornbread, Irish soda bread or garlic toast.

"Irish" Cornbread
|
What makes it Irish? The Green vegetables! They also help the cornbread to be moist and savory.
Preheat oven to 425 degrees, place oiled iron skillet in oven to heat while preparing cornbread batter.
Wash trim and finely chop ½ green pepper, 2 green onions, 1 rib celery.
Chop 2 slices bacon, cook until crispy, remove from pan. Saute vegetables in bacon fat until just tender. (For vegetarian version sauté vegetables in olive oil)
Prepare cornbread:
Combine 1 cup Cornmeal, 1 cup Flour, 4t baking powder, 1/8 cup sugar, salt and pepper to season.
In a small bowl combine 2 Eggs, 1 cup Buttermilk or milk, ¼ cup Olive Oil.
Mix together prepared vegetables, bacon, wet and dry ingredients until well combined and better is smooth (should be consistency of pancake batter, add a little water if too thick).
Pour batter into preheated iron skillet, bake for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown and toothpick comes out clean. Allow to cool, turn out on to serving plate.
