President's Message
|
Hello fellow PCMA members!
I cannot believe that we are already approaching June and that summer is right around the corner! Before we get to what's ahead for the Chapter, I would like to thank all of you that attended our March 5th education meeting.
The timely discussion about Medical Meetings 2013 led by Bill Mandell (Pierce & Mandell P.C., Founding Member and Co-Managing Partner) and Marissa Seligman PharmD, CCMEP (Chief Clinical & Regulatory Affairs and Compliance Officer for DBC Pri-Med, LLC. and Senior Vice President, pmiCME) and moderated by Pat Moscaritolo (President & CEO of the Greater Boston Convention and Visitors Bureau) gave many of us the opportunity to ask questions and hear more about what's to be expected with the new laws currently taking effect. Thank you to the Boston Harbor Hotel, for hosting the chapter event and allowing us to spend the afternoon in your magnificent space!
As I am writing this letter, it happens to be the one month anniversary of the Boston Marathon Bombing. This tragedy has affected all of us in one way or another whether you live or work in Boston or the surrounding areas. I will say that throughout these events, I am so proud of how "Boston Strong" we all are not only in Boston, but in the entire New England region. While no one wants to believe that a situation like this could happen to them, I believe that preparing for the worst and hoping for the best, is the safest way to arm ourselves for whatever the future brings. With this concept in mind, I urge you to attend our next education event:
Emergency and Crisis Management for Events, which will take place on Tuesday June 11th at the Exchange Conference Center. This session will give us all an opportunity to hear from, and interact with, individuals from all facets of the Event World who have managed through, overcome, and experienced a variety of crisis situations, like the Boston Marathon bombing, the power outages from earlier this year, snow storms, etc. Use their 20/20 hindsight as an opportunity to be better prepared for whatever hurdles may be in the future, and come ready to share your own experiences so we can all learn from each other! To help foster an even greater knowledge base, PCMA New England is teaming up with IAVM (International Association of Venue Managers) and the New England Chapter of IAEE (International Association of Exhibitions and Events) for this meeting.
Once we have done the work, it will be time for play! You don't want miss our Annual Red Sox Summer Social which will take place on Wednesday July 24th . Bring your Boston Strong energy and cheer on the Red Sox as they take on the Tampa Bay Devil Rays! We'll be kicking off the evening at Jillian's with a reception, before heading over to Fenway Park. As those of you who have attended before can attest, this event is sure to be a great time, so don't miss it and don't leave early . . . as you know, Boston has been known to pull out a win at the very end!
Thank you again for your continued support of the Chapter. I'm so proud of all we've accomplished and I hope to see you at one or both of our upcoming events. Enjoy what will be a wonderful summer ahead!
Sincerely,
Jackie Goodhart

"Shedding Light on the Sunshine Act"
Our March Program: Medical Meeting Update
|
"Have you been in the dark on the real implications of the Sunshine Act? On March 5, the PCMA New England Chapter presented an educational panel for medical meeting planners who are still working to grasp the full impact of new regulations.
Medical device, pharmaceutical, biological and medical supply companies are all preparing for a big day: March 31. That's when their first reports of all payments and transfers of value made to physicians for more than $10 are due to Health and Human Services. With looming uncertainty around the future of medical meetings, the meeting dug into what those reports will include.
The location of the panel was fitting. While the entire country is preparing for a new era of healthcare, Massachusetts has been dealing with similar compliance issues for quite some time."
Excerpt from "Shedding Light on the Sunshine Act" written by PCMA Staff Writer David McMilling. Read the full article HERE
It was definitely a topical meeting subject, as was evidenced by our record breaking attendance filling the picturesque meeting space of our host venue: the Boston Harbor Hotel. Expert speakers, Bill Mandell and Marissa Seligman covered all the down and dirty details about what was changing, what it meant, and when it would happen. We got to hear from the legal side, as well as the planner side, and questions were fielded from all ends of the Medical Meeting spectrum thanks to our diverse audience of planners, suppliers, and professional partners. Pat Moscaritolo helped hone all the information down to what this meant to Boston and Massachusetts as a meeting destination, by moderating the discussion.
In the end, attendees walked away informed, and hopeful. In being a leader in adopting many of the regulations included in the Sunshine Act, Massachusetts is already ahead of the game in executing the newly required reporting. With our excellent speakers filling in the blanks and outlining the changes, our members walked away armed and ready for the impending reporting deadline.
The educational portion was topped off in the typical PCMA New England way: with some networking and a reception! The Boston Harbor Hotel provided the perfect backdrop for mulling over all our newly acquired information and guests enjoyed the food provided while taking in the very visible city skyline views at sunset.
