President's Message

Dear PCMA New England Members,

It gives me great pleasure to kick off the first PCMA New England Newsletter of 2013! I'm looking forward to serving as this year's Chapter President as well as getting to know all of you!   I am pleased and honored to have so many talented and experienced members on both the board of directors and committee chairs to work with during the upcoming year.  Our goal for this year is to continue to provide you with timely, worthwhile education opportunities for you to get involved, and excellent networking events.

If you attended our Annual Meeting in December, you can see how excited we are to have PCMA Convening Leaders coming to Boston in January 2014!  We had a great event to get us "in the know" thanks to the Revere Hotel Boston Common, our esteemed panel including Jim Rooney, Executive Director of the Massachusetts Convention Center Authority, Pat Moscaritolo, President and CEO of the Greater Boston Convention & Visitors Bureau, and Kent Allaway, 2012 PCMA Chairman of the Board, and our surprise guest, Billy Costa!  As usual we hit the ground "running, running, running" in January at the PCMA Convening Leaders Conference in Orlando.  Our chapter had a fantastic reception to kick off the four days with many PCMA New England members in attendance,  who then got to experience a world-class meeting and a fantastic destination. Thank you to the MCCA for sponsoring the Chapter Reception where we got to rally before the conference and watch our beloved New England Patriots!

We're keeping the momentum going with a timely panel discussion on "Medical Meetings 2013 - What to Know If You Plan or Host Medical Meetings" which takes place on March 5th at the Boston Harbor HotelDon't forget to bring your donation to help support our charity of choice for this year, Children's Friend.  I hope to see you there!

As your President, I encourage all of you to take advantage during the upcoming year to get involved in one of the many chapter committees available, but also to volunteer to help with Convening Leaders 2014. Information on volunteer opportunities will be available as the year progresses - stay tuned to our newsletter and at chapter events for more information on how to sign up and check out our new blog!

Thank you again for all that you do for us and I look forward to a great year!

Sincerely,

Jackie Goodhart

Q: You're involved in a Student Chapter for PCMA.  How did you come to join?

A: The University of New Hampshire student chapter of the Professional Convention Management Association was formed in the spring 2011. A friend notified me that she was forming a PCMA student chapter and explained to me what was involved.  I have a passion for being involved in organizations that will better my future. I could sense that it would be very valuable for my future in hospitality management.

Q: What have you gained from your involvement?

A: I have attended multiple conventions and events where I've had the opportunity to network with hospitality industry professionals. These professionals are very glad to meet students and take time to reach out to them. They are always willing to share their experiences and give students advice to help plan their futures. It would be highly beneficial for more universities in the United States to form PCMA student chapters. Students could gain so much experience from the networking events and opportunities for future volunteering at PCMA hosted events. Other opportunities are touring different venues, and conversing with industry professionals about what their jobs entail, as well as interaction of students from college to college to build connections with peers who will also be working in the hospitality industry post-graduation.

Q: How did it feel to be awarded the PCMA NE Don Lawrence Memorial Scholarship?

A: I was truly honored to be the recipient this year. With the support from the scholarship I have been able to utilize it toward expenses that come along with being a college student. It has also given me a sense of confidence as I continue to hold the Vice President leadership role on the UNH PCMA chapter this year. I will be taking over the role as President of the student chapter next fall of my senior year. Our student chapter at the University of New Hampshire is still growing as we recruit more members and try to raise funding.

Q: Will you continue to be involved in regular PCMA events?

A: Our student chapter members are always willing to volunteer at events because we believe that it is the best way to experience which aspect of the hospitality industry we may want to enter after graduating.

Q: What are your plans for after graduation?

A: Upon my graduation in May of 2014, I hope to obtain a job in Event Planning. We are in tough economic times and many graduates will be competing for jobs in the hospitality industry, but I can only hope that my involvement in PCMA while in college will set me on the right track.

PCMA New England 20th Anniversary

December Annual Meeting Recap

Never was there a dull moment during the program at December's Annual Meeting & Auction event!

Attendees settled in their seats after registering and catching up and were greeted by our outgoing Chapter President, Kevin Panetta, for the final time.  But the sadness of losing one fearless leader, was quickly replaced by the excitement of gaining a new one!  Jackie Goodhart took the stage to address attendees as the new President of the New England Chapter!  Her first order of business was to induct the 2013 Board of Directors and Committee Chairs.  Luckily, any of the 2012 board members with terms coming to an end, stayed on and picked up a new role, so there was no need for goodbyes!

Then it was onto the evening's panel members:

  • Jim Rooney - MCCA
  • Pat Moscaritolo - GBCVB
  • Kent Allaway - PCMA Director

But just as the program was beginning to get underway, we were interrupted by a loud knock at the venue door - and in came Billy Costa!

Full of lively banter and important information, our panelists (with the help of Billy Costa) detailed the exciting plans ahead for Boston in 2014 as the next host of PCMA's Convening Leaders Conference!  The new logo was unveiled and Jim Rooney and Pat Moscaritolo outlined the plan for wowing the many planners and suppliers that will descend upon Boston next January.  Kent Allaway gave us an even farther look into the future with what Boston, and much of New England, can expect as a result of being a PCMA Convening Leaders host and the business and attention our area will undoubtedly attract.

Buzzing from the news, attendees left the program to network and mingle in one of the Revere Boston Hotel's versatile event rooms, decked out in the finest lighting and linen from Rentals Unlimited and executed flawlessly by NXTevent.  Members perused the auction items and sampled some of the fine cuisine the chefs at the Revere Boston had to offer, while Entertainment Specialists provided the evening's soundtrack.  Billy Costa made another cameo, this time as guest auctioneer, to hand out his contributed items to the highest bidders!

Overall it was a fun-filled night to celebrate the end of the year, but more importantly, welcome in the exciting year ahead!  Check out our Photo Gallery for all the fun moments of the evening!  Don't forget to keep in touch regarding PCMA Convening Leaders 2014 so you can learn how to get involved or be a volunteer!

PCMA Convening Leaders Orlando
NE Chapter Reception & Flash Mob Recap
PCMANE Flash Mob
New England migrated south in January for the PCMA Convening Leaders conference in Orlando, Fl and made a SPLASH!  With Boston as the host for the event next January, New Englanders making the pilgrimage, ensured every attendee knew that Boston was the place they wanted to be in 2014! Check out our FLASH MOB VIDEO and  Photos from the closing day luncheon. You may see a few familiar faces!

Elizabeth Dooley had the opportunity to attend the conference as our Scholarship
recipient.  Here is what she had to say:

Dear PCMA New England Chapter Board Members,

I wanted to thank you very much for selecting me as your scholarship recipient for the 2013 PCMA Convening Leaders meeting in Orlando, January 13-16. It was great to see familiar faces from the New England Chapter and participate in many informative and lively educational sessions.

Highlights from the educational end of things included a helpful presentation on updated contract provisions presented by attorney Joshua Grimes ("Just When You Think You've Got the Perfect Contract"), marketing sessions focused on creativity, branding and engaging your members, and a lively debate-centered session with industry heavy-hitters entitled "The Great Debates in Housing Today". Attached are the handouts from the "Open Discussion with Medical Meeting Planners" for anyone who is interested.

It was great to see so many friends at the New England Chapter reception and in the Boston booth. Clearly there is a lot of excitement and "buzz" building for the 2014 Convening Leaders! I was sorry to miss the final luncheon due to my return flight, but I enjoyed it vicariously through the social media posts.

One very special highlight was the Closing Reception at Universal Studios with New England Chapter friends - including the Shrek 3D movie adventure, the laser water display, and finally - the icing on the cake - riding the roller-coaster with our Chapter President and President-Elect. I will not divulge which one screamed louder, but it was a pretty close call!

Thank you again for making my participation possible!

Sincerely,

Liz Dooley
