President's Message

Kevin Panetta Headshot

Greetings my fellow PCMA New Englanders,

As I sit and write this letter I am in awe of the fact that this will be my last Letter from the President.  What an amazingly quick year this has been.  I have enjoyed every moment of it and will look back at it with nothing but fond memories.

I am very proud of the year we've had as a Chapter.  In addition to some fantastic education sessions and networking events, we've also been able to give back to the community.  The Board and Committee Chairs have just returned from a fantastic working retreat in Providence, RI as we begin our plans for the upcoming year.  As in previous years, the team contributed to the organization's annual Service in Sync philanthropy initiative.  This year, a team of 13 volunteered for the afternoon at Children's Friend, a private, not-for-profit agency that has been helping children and families in Providence since 1849!  Our team assisted in the classrooms by reading stories, making puzzles and helping to put some smiles on a lot of young faces.  I think what really happened though is that they put smiles on our faces.  Smiles that lasted several days!  I would like to wish a special thanks to our friends at the Providence Warwick CVB for helping us coordinate the day of service as well to the team at the Renaissance Providence Downtown for hosting our retreat and knocking it out of the of park!  If you haven't been to the property, I highly recommend a weekend getaway, or even better yet, planning a meeting there!

As our year winds down, we look forward to our Chapter's Annual Meeting and Auction.  This year, we're thrilled to have Kent Allaway, Chairman of the Board for PCMA, join us and update us on the many accomplishments of the organization throughout this past year.  We're also thrilled to kick off Convening Leaders 2014 which will take place in Boston!  Come hear from co-host committee chairs Jim Rooney, Executive Director of the MCCA and Pat Moscaritolo, President of the Greater Boston CVB as they outline Boston's plan for hosting this industry leading event.  Come see how this meeting can affect our destination for years to come as we play host to over 3,000 meeting professionals!

I want to thank each and every one of you for giving me this fantastic opportunity to serve you this year as our Chapter's President.  It was an amazing experience that I'll never forget.  I look forward to continued service to the chapter and the ever continuing growth and success of what I feel is the best Chapter in the country!

Wishing you and your families a very special and safe holiday season and a wonderful 2013 ahead!

Sincerely,

Kevin Panetta

Nov 2011 Service In Sync Service in Sync with Children's Friends

On Thursday, November 15, members of the PCMA New England Board of Directors volunteered at Children's Friend of Providence.  Children's Friend is an agency that provides a multitude of offerings benefitting children and their parents, from adoption and foster-care, to crisis centers and classrooms.  The classrooms are where we had the chance to spend our time that day.  Available for children aged 3-5 that face obstacles such as poverty, language barriers, substance abuse, and lack of education at home, we knew our time was being dedicated to a great cause!

Met with smiling faces, excited hellos, and energetic waves from just about every child we came into contact with, it was hard to tell the challenges that these young kids faced every day.  As volunteers, we were welcomed whole-heartedly.  From 2-5pm, we interacted one-on-one with the children, made popsicle snowflakes, played outside, sang and danced, built skyscrapers out of Lego's and building blocks, and read stories.  It was only a short time, but many of the children knew a lot of us by name and said farewell with big hugs when the day was over.  It's hard to imagine that just three hours could have made such a big impact on every one of us.  Even long after leaving Children's Friend, many of us were still excitedly swapping stories and talking about the specific kids we met and spent time with.  We're so thankful that places like the Children's Friend, and their staff, exist to provide a great place for these amazing children to grow and learn.

PCMA New England has adopted Children's Friend as an organization that we will support through the upcoming year. Our team that volunteered will remember the experiences we had there for quite a while to come!

September Educational Program Recap

Our September Educational program was a tremendous success! PCMA New England, the Connecticut Society of Association Executives (CSAE) and the Connecticut River Valley Chapter of MPI (CRV MPI) welcomed three talented and informative speakers - Joy Baldridge, Ruth Sherman and Doug McPhee.

The program started with tabletop exhibits followed by lunch and the keynote Speaker. Joy Baldridge gave a "joy"-filled and dynamic presentation packed with great life-lessons and success advice ranging from "Purple Breaks" (covering your eyes with your hands to allow yourself to recharge during the day) to public speaking tips.

Lunch was followed by two break-out sessions. Ruth Sherman gave a presentation on video charisma, focuing on the benefits that YouTube videos can bring to your business, while Doug McPhee's spoke about managing volunteers.

The Connecticut Convention Center was an amazing host venue that provided ample space, and beautiful views out of large windows during all the great networking opportunities sprinkled throughout the day. During lunch and dinner, members from each of the associations had a chance to meet, mingle, and connect over lunch and the closing reception. As an added benefit, many people carpooling from Boston had the chance to continue the conversations on the transportation coach provided by CMAC for the ride to and from the event.

Thank you to our co-hosts and generous sponsors for this event!
