CONTRA COSTA USA: JANUARY 24, 2013
CCUSA 2013 offers a full range of political and economic perspectives

Chris Thornberg 2013
Christopher Thornberg
Contra Costa USA 2013, or CCUSA, promises to offer another excellent forum for the discussion of politics, the economy, and just how innovative and technologically savvy the greater East Bay really is, and wants to be.

Set for Thursday, January 24, at the Hilton Concord, the premier annual business event in Contra Costa County is presented by the Contra Costa Council and Chevron. Now in its 27th year, CCUSA opens at 8 a.m. with registration, exhibits and networking, followed by presentations and lunch. The program adjourns at 2 p.m., reconvening at 5:30 p.m. for a reception and dinner presentation at 7 p.m.

America in 2013: Challenges and Opportunities, the dinner keynote address, will be delivered by Howard Dean, former Vermont Governor and former chair of the Democratic National Committee, and Michael Steele, MSNBC political analyst and former Republican National Committee chair and former Maryland Lieutenant Governor. The luncheon keynote will be delivered by Ellen Tauscher, former special envoy for strategic stability and missile defense, U.S. Department of State, and former representative of California's 10th congressional district.

Opening the day's program with A Regional View of Our Economic Outlook is Christopher Thornberg of Beacon Economics. The first morning panel, The Role of the Research Labs in Our Regional Economy, features Buck Koonce and Patrick M. Dempsey of Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Rob White of the i-GATE Innovation Hub (iHub) of Livermore, Jay D. Keasling of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, and Dale Kaye of Innovation Tri-Valley, moderating. A second panel, titled The Role of Corporations in Innovation in Our Regional Economy, will include J. Patrick Kennedy of OSIsoft, John Magee of GE Software, Des King of Chevron Technology Ventures, and Gary Craft of Craft Consulting Group, moderating.

Call Linda Best or Terry Shoaff at (925) 246-1880 to inquire about sponsorship opportunities or exhibit booths. Register by January 18 at the Council website.
NOVEMBER 16 BREAKFAST RECAP
Clarification on our story about the Contra Costa Poll

Due to an editing error, we misreported a statement by panelist Steven Glazer in our recap of the Contra Costa Poll panel discussion at the Council's November 16 breakfast. In fact, when asked to describe "a major takeaway" from the November election, Glazer said that "independent lines," i.e., the districts created by the Reapportionment Commission, played a role in election results. -- Ed.
CEO VIEWPOINT
L Best You don't want to miss this year's Contra Costa USA!

By Linda Best, President and CEO, Contra Costa Council

Be sure to make your reservations for Contra Costa USA, on January 24, right away. The deadline is January 18 and tickets are going fast!

Our blockbuster program features our dinner keynoters, Howard Dean, former Governor of Vermont and former chair of the Democratic National Committee, and Michael Steele, former chair of the Republican National Committee and MSNBC political analyst. Their observations and perspectives on the 2012 election and the politics around the fiscal issues in Congress promise to be informative and provocative, and certainly timely.

And don't miss our morning program. We start with noted economist Christopher Thornberg of Beacon Economics, who will provide a view of our economic outlook, both nationally and regionally. Those of you who have heard Chris in the past know that he delivers a riveting presentation that makes economics understandable, provocative and entertaining (no small feat for the so-called "dismal science").

Following Chris's presentation, we will offer two panels highlighting the strengths of our East Bay economy in terms of innovation. The first panel features the role of our research labs, with representatives from Lawrence Berkeley National Lab, Lawrence Livermore National Lab and the Open Campus, and the i-GATE facility in Livermore. The second panel will spotlight the role of cutting-edge corporations in our region that are driving economic development and job creation.

We are especially pleased that our own Ellen Tauscher will be our luncheon keynoter. As our former Congressional representative, Ellen was a leader in innovation and economic development in our region and so effective in Congress in supporting our national laboratories and their role in the East Bay. She will also share her extraordinary experiences as Under Secretary for Arms Control and International Security Affairs at the State Department.

See the related article, above, for registration information, and please contact us at (925) 246-1880 if you have any questions.

Sponsorships are still available. Contact Linda Best if you are interested in sponsoring this great program or to learn more about the benefits of sponsorship.

Workforce Initiative receives Chevron grant for science, technology, engineering and math education effort

Six Richmond area nonprofit organizations, including the Contra Costa Economic Partnership's STEM Workforce Initiative, have been selected to receive a share of $1 million as a grant from Chevron as part of the company's California Partnership Program, an initiative that invests in education and economic development in California.

The Partnership's STEM Workforce Initiative received a $200,000 grant for its project, Deepening the Real World STEM Connection, which will help improve student achievement by providing work-based learning opportunities and science, technology, engineering and math curriculum support, and helping students transition from high school to post-secondary education, training and high-demand careers.

The grants will expand access to high-quality STEM educational opportunities, with a focus on working directly with the West Contra Costa Unified School District (WCCUSD) to improve the quality of education in local schools. In addition, the grants will help increase and sustain economic development opportunities for families in Richmond and West Contra Costa County because the entities receiving the grants offer comprehensive services that improve self-sufficiency and help small businesses create and sustain jobs, according to Chevron.

"Chevron is committed to boosting Richmond's economic development and improving the quality of life for local residents," said Heather Kulp, public affairs manager for Chevron's Richmond Refinery. For more information about the grant, visit Chevron Richmond's press release page here.

Business/Education Leadership Summit: education, innovation and the East Bay economy

Education and ongoing workforce development must be the region's top priority if we are to continue to build a vibrant economic future in the East Bay. That's the central premise of the 2013 East Bay Business/Education Leadership Summit, which will be held Wednesday, February 27, from 7:15 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Hilton Concord, 1970 Diamond Boulevard.

Keynote presenters include the morning speaker, Dr. Willard Daggett, president of the International Center for Leadership in Education, and afternoon speaker, Kish Rajan, GO-Biz director of the Governor's Office of Business and Economic Development and former Walnut Creek City Council member. Workshops and small-group discussions will round out the program.

The business and education conclave will focus on increasing the region's ability to supply skilled workers through purposeful alignment of high-school Linked Learning transformation strategies with post-secondary education and training. The event brings together leaders from business, government, labor and education to examine the critical issues that intersect education, workforce development and the economy.

The all-day conference is being presented by Chevron. Collaborative partners hosting the event include the Greater Concord Chamber of Commerce, the Contra Costa Economic Partnership, the Contra Costa Council and the East Bay Economic Development Alliance (East Bay EDA). Sponsorship opportunities are still available, and individual tickets can be purchased online. For more information, visit this page.

Diablo Delta Corridor Project gets state approval

The California Department of Education announced on January 4 the 20 participants in California who will be the first to take part in a new state program designed to help students graduate from high school prepared to succeed in careers and college. Legislation (AB 790) by former Assemblymember Warren Furutani called for the establishment of a statewide Linked Learning pilot program. The participants selected by the state, in conjunction with outside partners, include school districts, county offices of education, and several regional consortia of education agencies. The pilot program will be used to assess how Linked Learning can be expanded to schools across the state.

The Diablo Delta Corridor Project (D2CP) Consortium is a partnership of three school districts within Contra Costa County, with Antioch Unified School District serving as the mentor for the other districts in the consortium. Mt. Diablo and Pittsburg Unified will collaborate with Antioch Unified and the Contra Costa Economic Partnership to focus on the manufacturing industry sector as well as the energy and utilities industry sector, which reflect the growing career opportunities in the region. For more information, contact April Treece.
