Presidents' message

Dear SEMS Members,
Welcome to the SEMS March newsletter. For those of us in the northern hemisphere, it has been a cold, icy and long winter. We are grateful for any signs of spring! One of those signs is the IIE Annual Conference and Expo. This year, the conference is being held from May 31-June 3 in the beautiful city of Montréal, Canada. For those of you who have attended in the past, you recognize the value of networking with like-minded colleagues. We learn from experts around the world about the newest research at the ISERC along with practical applications from the Applied Solutions Conference. Your society has a large presence at both conferences sponsoring the Engineering Management tracks. This year we have Warren Boldring from IBM as the ISERC Engineering Management track featured speaker. We speak about him in our ISERC section.

Time for the professional roundtable | IIE Annual Conference and Expo The Society for Engineering and Management Systems of the Institute of Industrial Engineers is sponsoring the Engineering Management (EM) Tracks of the Industrial and Systems Engineering Research Conference (ISERC) and the Applied Solutions Conference(ASC), respectively, at the IIE Annual Conference and Expo 2014. The conference will be held from May 31 to June 3 at the Palais des Congrés de Montréal in Montréal, Canada.

December 2013 and January 2014, the SEMS Blog website recorded the most traffic with 1,251 views of the 14 blog articles written. This was a result of the innovative idea by Dr. Cecilia Martinez León from Clarkson University to involve her students in blogging during the educational trip to Mexico.

Paper beats rock every time, let's get writing | SEMS Student Paper Competition We thank our student participants for submitting their final papers on time. Papers are being blind reviewed by our selected group of judges. We also want to thank our judges for their time spent in reviewing the papers. We expect to announce the winners by the second week of March 2014. Stay tuned!

Volunteer Request: Contact Cecilia Martinez León if you are interested in organizing and supporting student initiatives.
