January 2014
Presidents' message
Dear SEMS members,

Happy New Year to everyone! We hope you all had a joyous holiday with time for friends and family, and we wish you a happy and prosperous 2014!
A new year is always an exciting time bursting with potential and opportunity to do new things as we start the clock ticking again. SEMS has the good fortune of having two "new" years - both the calendar year and the Society year that starts in June! As we reach this half way mark of our Society year, we have plenty more activities ongoing, including a call for nominations for the SEMS Board, planning for the annual ISERC and Solutions conference in Montreal, an update on the recently held Continuous Improvement Virtual Conference (there's still time to hear the presentations!) as well as planning for the 2014 virtual conference.

SEMS news
In 2012, SEMS launched an initiative to become your preferred place for knowledge exchange and discussion about the engineering management topics critical to advancing your career, whether as a student, an academic, or a practitioner. This month, we feature discussions on healthcare quality and safety.
It is not too late to submit nominations for the 2014 SEMS Management Award, which will be presented at the IIE Annual Conference & Expo 2014 in Montreal. The purpose of this award is to recognize a current IIE member (who does not have to be a current SEMS member), who has distinguished himself or herself in the practice of management and industrial engineering. Nominations should be submitted to the 2013-14 SEMS Immediate Past President Jennifer FarrisNominations are requested by Jan. 31.
