President's message

Dear Computer and Information Systems Division members,

Seokcheon Lee
Last year the CIS division has redefined its vision and mission in order to clarify and envision the scope of CIS activities. We encourage interested members to see the vision and mission statements and provide feedback to me or other board members. The CIS activities are organized by the members of division board and a list of board members is available on the CIS website. You have elected a new president-elect, John Jung-Woon Yoo from Bradley University, and two new directors, Gerald Knapp from Louisiana State University and Hui Yang from University of South Florida. Thank you for your participation in the voting to select these outstanding leaders to serve our division. Our best wishes to the exiting board members Young-Jun Son and Russell Wooten; we would like to thank them for their dedicated service to our division.

Announcement: Second CIS Division Mobile App Competition

The advent of mobile devices such as Apple i-series and Samsung Galaxy series has dramatically changed not only personal lifestyles, but also business practices. Tech-savvy industrial & systems engineers have foreseen the potentials of the new technology and are actively applying it to solve problems in their own domains

Announcement: Sponsorship opportunity for CIS Division Mobile App Competition

Mobile devices are rapidly becoming the interface of choice to business information and processes.  It is critical that industrial & systems engineers become familiar with developing systems that incorporate these devices. To this end, the CIS Division has developed a new Mobile App Competition to encourage students to develop expertise in the use of Mobile devices (see announcement for the competition above).

We are currently seeking sponsorships for the competition.  If you or your company can assist with a sponsorship, please contact the competition co-chairs (emails below). Sponsors will be recognized at the ISERC 2014 conference and in CIS division newsletters.

One of the benefits of belonging to a professional society is the opportunity to share knowledge about various topics of interest.

Topic:  Semantic Information Extraction by Gerald Knapp, associate professor, mechanical and industrial engineering, Louisiana State University

Dr. Knapp and his research team at LSU have recently focused on advancing the ability of computers to identify and extract "meaning" from document, image, and video content. The goal is to obtain human-level - and better - capabilities in understanding and reasoning from text, speech, and visual scenes. These technologies have a broad range of potential applications, including improved search engines, better security monitoring, and assistive robotics.

Stay connected!

The CIS Division website is a great place to go see the latest division events. Additionally, we have launched a LinkedIn subgroup at http://www.linkedin.com/groups?gid=2195861.

IIE members or non-members can subscribe to this group and start new discussions related to CIS topics, get current news about the division, post jobs, and ask questions. Help us spread the word.

We look forward to your support and greatly appreciate your feedback on how to address your current needs though this subgroup.

We would also like to hear from you on what you would like to see in the newsletter. Contact Seokcheon Lee (CIS President).
