Presidents' message

Dear SEMS members,

Welcome to the September issue of the SEMS Newsletter. This issue marks the two-year anniversary of the SEMS Newsletter - an achievement we are proud to say has been integral to highlighting all the great avenues SEMS members have to learn, network and participate!

This issue we would like to highlight our upcoming annual virtual conference on Best Practices in Managing Continuous Improvement on Nov. 20. This year we are focusing on Lean as the theme of the conference. The success of our inaugural conference last year demonstrated the value proposition of virtual attendance - all of the network and knowledge transfer with none of the travel costs! So be sure to mark your calendar on Nov. 20 to take advantage of the opportunity to network with and learn from continuous improvement experts from around the globe in the comfort of your own home or office. 2013 ISERC Conference Paper Competition results

The Industrial and Systems Engineering Research Conference (ISERC), part of the IIE Annual Conference and Expo, is a forum for exchanging knowledge and discoveries in the industrial and systems engineering research community. Each year, a paper competition is held within the Engineering Management track. The winning paper was "Improving Departmental Quality Performance with Interdepartmental Integration" by Qing Li, Wiljeana Glover, Eitan Naveh, and Michael Gross. One of the five finalist papers was "Partnering for Solutions: Applied Research in Engineering Management" by A. Krishnamurthy and W.K.V. Chan. The next two SEMS Newsletters will feature the remaining four finalist papers.

SEMS Newsletter next editor needed
SEMS members, one of the most rewarding and valuable contributions you could make to our Society is to volunteer to serve as the next editor of our newsletter. Serving in this role requires only a few hours a month. You don't need any prior editing experience, you simply need a desire to help keep the society strong and continually look for opportunities to improve. If you're interested in possibly serving in this role, contact our current editor, Dean Creed.
SEMS Blog

We have now posted 34 blogs on the SEMS website to inform you about recent developments in engineering management practice and research. For example, Dr. Dhirendra Kumar, who has more than 30 years of technical, management, teaching, and research experience with major U.S. corporations and universities, and has published books such as Six-Sigma Best Practices and Enterprise Growth Strategy, posted a series of blogs related to enterprise transformation. Dr. Alison Schroeder and Dr. Sara McComb provided insights about collective cognition and its importance on team performance. Dr. Carla G. Machado, Dr. Edson Pinheiro de Lima and Dr. Sergio E. Gouvea da Costa provided a summary of recent developments in innovating for sustainability, based on articles published in the 2012 Summer Edition of MIT Sloan Management Review..

Please check out our blogs by going to www.sems-blog.org. We recommend you not only to visit our website, but also encourage you to comment on blogs to challenge our topic leaders to develop materials that can help you into the 21st century.

Did you know about this SEMS webpage?

The rapid advancements taking place globally in technology, the global economy, and social life suggest that future engineering management (EM) practitioners are going to experience a world very different from the one in which we live today. This creates an urgent need for research to discover necessary advancements in the way EM practitioners analyze data, develop strategies, lead change, and execute projects. As a result, SEMS aims to become your preferred source for information to help advance your career, whether as a student, an academic, or a practitioner.

Please visit www.iienet2.org/sems/ and go to the 'Tools and Resources' tab to find information related to your EM topics of interest.

Topics include enterprise transformation, strategy development and implementation, performance management, human resource management, teams and workgroups, systems thinking, learning organization, organizational culture, leadership and ethics, change management, materials and supply chain management, lean management, Six Sigma, project management, product development, healthcare - quality improvement and patient safety, education and training, simulation, and green and sustainability.

Member spotlight - Kirk Knock

In this section, we highlight a SEMS member for outstanding leadership in IIE and for exceptional service to the Society. This month, we honor Kirk Knock!

Kirk's professional contributions include providing a SEMS webinar presentation that described how to move from a "quality owned" to a "process area owned" management review process in the ISO 9001 or ISO 13485 environment. He discussed how this shift leads to accountability for efficient and effective processes throughout the organization. The content included the "before" and "after" approach used to make the review more engaging and risk-based. More about Kirk
