Dear Division Members,
This is a special moment for our division since it was founded 10 years ago. As most of you know, we have had only one president in the name of Dr. Lincoln H. Forbes. As the founding and only president the division had known since inception, his vision, foresight, enthusiasm, and determination to follow through resulted in an IIE Division with 1,600 members currently. This happened within 10 short years and is an accomplishment we should all be proud of. Please join me in thanking Lincoln and the members of the board of directors who worked with him to make this happen.
Thank you for a job well done. More from the president

Control your project's plans and schedules
By Dr. P.K. Joy
Despite the absorption of all the latest knowledge into project management and construction techniques, huge time and cost overruns do continue to plague mega construction projects the world over, with corresponding retardation in development programs. This menace calls for urgent attention of leaders in the construction industry as well as project owners. Read the full article
Message from the editor
This month's message from the editor is a simple quotation and a request.
Quotation (sent in an email from IIE rock star, Mike Deegan):"For success, like happiness, cannot be pursued; it must ensue, and it only does so as the unintended side-effect of one's dedication to a cause greater than oneself or as the by-product of one's surrender to a person other than oneself" -Viktor E. Frankl

The emergence of pre-fabrication & its role in productivity improvement
By Sammy Geroulis, Project manager for AMEND Consulting LLC
Prefabrication is not a new activity; in fact, nearly 95 percent of construction industry players utilize it in some way, with more than two-thirds of these firms engaged in the practice for the last five-plus years. However, McGraw-Hill research has found only 37 percent of this sampling to be currently employing these actions at a "high level" (i.e., on more than half of current projects)1. Though the concept of producing/assembling large batch building components off site has existed since the early 1900s, such practices have often battled against stigmas of "cheapness" or "poor quality" - despite proving to be a key component behind the swift erection of many world-class superstructures over the last century.
Student liaison's message

Vice president, brand management, The Ohio State University Chapter
I hope everyone has had an enjoyable summer! With a new academic year comes a wave of new opportunities - knowledge to learn, friends to make and experiences to have.
Personally, as the smells of autumn fill the air, I feel like a clean page has been turned, and I can begin a whole new story.Drawing from the experiences of the past year and summer, I have a more profound sense of what I want to accomplish, the person I want to be, and where I want to take my passions. I hope that for all of you individually, you feel some similar drive to ignite your passions and set new goals for yourself. Whether you aim to get a 4.0 GPA, learn a new language, or land that dream internship or job, don't ever stop following your passions and improving yourself. Read more from Ben

Wanted: Construction articles for Industrial Engineer magazine
The Construction Division invites members to submit articles on construction topics through our publications committee for publication in the monthly Industrial Engineer magazine. We would like to see IE-related articles about construction included in the Industrial Engineer magazine on a regular basis, and we are starting by determining which members are interested, and the topics that they would like to write about. At this point, we would just like to see a brief outline of the topic(s) that you wish to write about. Following that we plan to provide you with the detailed publication requirements, such as the format and length to be observed for each article. By working together, we can organize our articles in a sequence that will be most interesting and informative for our readers. Please contact Bobby Smyth.
