Notes from Newsletter Editor - Bobby Smyth
Highlighting research of Dr. Behrokh Khoshnevis, USC
Hi everyone,
When approached recently by Dr. Behrokh "Berok" Khoshnevis from the University of Southern California (USC) about his construction technology efforts to aid Lunar and Martian missions, I was floored. In my time involved in the paper competitions and newsletters for the IIE construction division, we've discussed integration of rough-cut lean tools into project management, and introducing people to the "soft skills" that save us money. But, Dr. Khoshnevis's work deserves a much deeper dive into the cutting edge benefits of integrating an industrial engineering mindset into the world of construction materials and beyond!
He has extensive literature and incredible pictures which we would like to display in our next newsletter; however, please consider reading this introductory description as a "teaser" to get us all excited about what's to come.
Thanks so much,
Bobby

Membership chair's message
By George P. Gardner, state partnering coordinator, Virginia Department of Transportation
Hello all Fellow Construction Division Members!
Wow! Time is really flying by! It's seems like we just finished up with our last annual conference and here we are working on our next one. As you may already know, the next annual conference is being held in Puerto Rico! What a great venue! The Division is gearing up for it, and our President- elect Matt Horvat and President Lincoln Forbes are working hard to contact as many potential presenters as possible.
Please let us know if you have any interest or know of others you may want to present this year. We are always looking for new innovations in making our construction processes more efficient and effective. Also, if you would like to submit an article for our newsletter, please contact us. We all learn so much from our fellow IE's that can enhance our own jobs.
As always, please let me if know you are interested in serving the Division.
Sincerely,
George

Student liaison's message
"If you want to succeed you should strike out on new paths, rather than travel the worn paths of accepted success." - J. D. Rockefeller
Truer words could not be spoken. In a time where business is constantly affected by new technologies, influences from social media, and the discovery of new best practices, a new age of thinking and innovation is demanded to get the job done. And who better suited for this evolution then the outstanding minds within Industrial Engineering and IIE!
As Industrial Engineers, we have the skill set to work in any job, reform any field, and improve any industry. All we have to do is follow our passions and a career will follow. IIE is just one vehicle for getting you the places you want to go and to your passions. The construction industry is one of the many low hanging fruits ripe for the improvements and enhancements that you as an IE can contribute. From Construction Division standpoint, if you seek a career in an up and coming industry, thirsty for innovation and change, we may have what you're looking for. Regardless of what you passion may be, I want all IE students to strive for it. If I can help you in any way, or if you have any questions about the Construction Division, please don't hesitate to contact me.
Thank you for your support!
Regards,
Ben Freidenberg Student Liaison, IIE Construction Division
VP Brand Management, The Ohio State University Chapter

Wanted: Construction articles for Industrial Engineer magazine
The Construction Division invites members to submit articles on construction topics through our publications committee for publication in the monthly Industrial Engineer magazine. We would like to see IE-related articles about construction included in the Industrial Engineer magazine on a regular basis, and we are starting by determining which members are interested, and the topics that they would like to write about. At this point, we would just like to see a brief outline of the topic(s) that you wish to write about. Following that we plan to provide you with the detailed publication requirements, such as the format and length to be observed for each article. By working together, we can organize our articles in a sequence that will be most interesting and informative for our readers. Please contact Lincoln Forbes.
