De-Clawing the Lion of Judah Straight Talk from Dorothy
I love Dorothy Sayers, English author, playwright and Christian apologist (1893-1957), not only because she liked to smoke cigars but she wrote things like this: "The people who hanged Christ never, to do them justice, accused him of being a bore - on the contrary, they thought him too dynamic to be safe. It has been left for later generations to muffle up that shattering personality and surround him with an atmosphere of tedium. We have very efficiently pared the claws of the Lion of Judah, certified him as 'meek and mild,' and recommended him as a fitting household pet for pale curates and pious old ladies ... He was emphatically not a dull man in his human lifetime, and if he was God, there can be nothing dull about God either. But he had 'a daily beauty in his life that made us ugly,' and officialdom felt that the established order of things would be more secure without him. So they did away with God in the name of peace and quietness."

Put This In Your Pipe and Smoke It
Quotes to Provoke and Ponder "In a president, character is everything. A president doesn't have to be brilliant ... he doesn't have to be clever; you can hire clever .... You can hire pragmatic, and you can buy and bring in policy wonks. But you cannot buy courage and decency; you can't rent a strong moral sense. A president must bring those things with him." - Peggy Noonan
"If we never have headaches through rebuking our children, we shall have plenty of heartaches when they grow up." - Charles Haddon Spurgeon
David didn't need to know Goliath's strength because he already knew God's.
"A man cannot have character unless he lives within a fundamental system of morals that creates character." - President Harry S Truman
"The gospel doesn't add to who we are; it transforms who we are. The gospel isn't about addition; it's about exchange." - Rosaria Butterfield
"Nobody made a greater mistake than he who did nothing because he could only do a little." - Edmund Burke
"The more empty I am, the more room is there for my Master. The more I lack, the more He will give me." - Charles Haddon Spurgeon

This July 4th Celebrate Jesus - The Freedom Giver

"For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery...For you were called to freedom, brothers. Only do not use your freedom as an opportunity for the flesh, but through love serve one another. For the whole law is fulfilled in one word: "You shall love your neighbor as yourself." - Galatians 5:1, 13-14 The origin, the source of true freedom, is in God himself expressed through his son Jesus Christ, who came to "set the captives free." This 4th of July as we remember and appreciate the special freedoms we enjoy as Americans we'll not hear much, if anything, from public officials and politicians about the gospel that saves us from ourselves. Before my 18 years of full-time pastoral ministry, I had a 30-year career in the US government, which included serving 8 years as an appointee of President Reagan. He often spoke about the freedom behind our freedoms. Reagan well understood the inexorable bond between faith and freedom. He remarked that "Freedom is never more than a generation from extinction ... It must be fought for, protected, and handed on" yet he didn't want those generations fighting that fight without the Shepherd of the Faith. Check out this 4-minute video about his views about the gospel - HERESPECIAL MUSIC VIDEO FOR JULY 4: Independence Day is by The Union of Sinners and Saints, which features members of Petra and Whiteheart. You Are Not Your Sexuality
Sam Allberry, who pastors at St. Mary's Church in Maidenhead, UK, has same sex attractions. In this video Sam has some incredibly relevant things to say to all of us on sexuality and identity as well as on all our temptations and sin.
He reminds us that we're not defined by our sin or our temptations. Instead, we're defined by who we are before God the Father in Jesus Christ. When you're striving to be holy, to be Christlike, you're not going against the grain of who you really are, you're going with it. If you are in Christ, you're most being you when you're pursuing godliness, not when you're pursuing sin. Check out helpful Sam's video HERE

Thinking Through November Choices and Much More
As the country moves toward an historic election this November, Christianity is at a pivotal moment. We Christ followers live in a culture that's been undergoing dramatic, even radical, moral and social shifts at a remarkably rapid pace. Many of us are understandably distraught and unsure how to think about and respond to these changes. For generations, our society has agreed with, or at least was not hostile to, our convictions. That consensus position is fast eroding, hostility is rampant and secularism is in rapid ascent.
What's needed now is neither a doubling-down on the status quo nor retreat into isolation. We especially need godly men to speak to social and political issues with a bigger vision in mind: that of the gospel of Jesus Christ! Dr. Russell Moore, president of the Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission (ERLC), is not angry, despairing, or panicked about the current state of affairs in the culture and the church. His response to what is happening is a supreme confidence in the gospel and its power. Moore is calling you and me and our churches to embrace the distinctiveness of our faith (even its "strangeness" to the secular culture) and to be a "prophetic minority" that champions human dignity, sanctity of life, religious liberty, biblical manhood and womanhood, and strong, stable families.
Moore's new book Onward: Engaging the Culture without Losing the Gospel is WACMM's Book of the Year for Men. Buy It! Read It! Share It! Then move to engage the culture in the power of the gospel wherever God has planted you! For a free PDF preview of the book's introduction and first chapter, click HERE
