Video: Authentic Manhood
A Man's Pen Reveals His HeartOn September 23, 1990, Ken Burns' mini-series documentary, The Civil War, made its debut on PBS. It would become immensely popular across the nation during its initial airing that fall. However, there was one moment that defined the series, and which fired the imagination and touched the hearts of viewers across the nation. It was the reading of a letter written by an obscure volunteer major from Rhode Island named Sullivan Ballou to his wife back in Smithfield. It reminds us of authentic manhood characterized by honorable, sacrificial, unconditional love. Check the video clip HERE

Freedom From the Performance Treadmill
Recently our friend and mentor Jerry Bridges went home to the Lord. As I was re-reading his classic book "Transforming Grace" today, Jerry reminded me once again about my (our) freedom from the performance treadmill in Christ Jesus. You and I need to hold fast to this reality. Below are some excerpts from Jerry's wisdom:
"My observation of Christendom is that most of us tend to base our personal relationship with God on our performance instead of on His grace. If we've performed well - whatever "well" is in our opinion - then we expect God to bless us. If we haven't done so well, our expectations are reduced accordingly. In this sense, we live by works rather than grace. We are saved by grace, but we are living by the "sweat" of our own performance...READ MORE

When Restrooms Are Weaponized
TIME magazine recently observed, "Bathrooms often become battlegrounds in fights over civil rights." San Francisco now requires single-occupancy washrooms be designated as gender-neutral, and a gender-neutral washroom on each floor of new buildings. Gender-neutral washrooms have been added to the city's building inspection checklist. Christians should be concerned about how local building codes are "weaponizing" washrooms to advance the transgender agenda. READ MORE

Ben-Hur: Another Movie Remake - Will This One Work?
Last week the first trailer of the upcoming remake of the epic movie Ben-Hur was released. It'll take a mighty film-making effort to top the twelve academy awards, including best picture, that the 1959 epic hauled in. We're interested in what it does to a truly great story and if it will disappoint as many so-called "faith-based" movies have in the last several years.
Hitting theaters August 12, the remake will tell the story of Judah Ben-Hur, a prince falsely accused of treason by his adopted brother, an officer in the Roman army. Stripped of his title and estate and separated from his family, Judah is sent into slavery. After years of hardship and despair, he returns home seeking revenge and ends up encountering Jesus of Nazareth. Check out the new trailer HERE, which previews a hi-tech version chariot race, an epic naval battle, plenty of fighting and a crucifixion scene. Also as a bonus, here's one of the most powerful scenes from the 1959 Ben-Hur starring Charlton Heston, as Judah Ben-Hur CLICK HERE

Put These in Your Pipe and Smoke 'Em

"The depth to which we believe the gospel is revealed by our willingness to be known at their worst." - DB
"If asked why we will not alter the definition of marriage, our response must be "We can't. We didn't define it to begin with. We received it." - Trevin Wax
"Jesus is the only one who could borrow a tomb and give it back when he was finished with it." unknown
Two great gospel truths: we're worse than we ever thought but more loved than we'd ever hoped.
"The better we know God, the more we will want all our existence to revolve around him." - D.A. Carson
"It is of no use to hope that we shall be well rooted if no rough winds pass over us." - Charles Spurgeon
"God's work done in God's way will never lack God's supply." - Hudson Taylor
"The only safe rule when it comes to generosity is to give away more than we can spare." - C. S. Lewis
"Porn has destroyed countless lives and can destroy yours. The truth is you don't have the resources to change within yourself." - Heath Lambert
"We can only change permanently as we take the gospel more deeply into our hearts." - Tim Keller
"Six feet of dirt make all men equal." - Charles Spurgeon
In Cor 15:1-3 Paul reminds the Corinthians (who are already believers) about the gospel, which he says is of "FIRST IMPORTANCE" So evidently, the gospel message is not only for evangelism but also for discipleship; it's not only for unbelievers, but also for believers!
"The truly wise are humble because they know they still have so much to learn." - Don Whitney
