Untold Faith Stories in American Sniper & Unbroken

Chris Kyle, often described as the most lethal sniper in U.S. military history, wrote in his autobiography that he prioritized his life in the following order: God, country, family.

But God doesn't make a central appearance in the film "American Sniper," which has been setting box office records since its January 16 release. Interestingly, the film offers a few similarities to  "Unbroken," Angelina Jolie's recent World War II epic about Christian WWII-POW hero Louis Zamperini. It shortchanged the story of Louie's Christian conversion and lifelong ministry.

Both stories focus on the dramatic stories of warriors who died before the movie versions of their lives came out. Both "American Sniper"and "Unbroken" include an early scene of their families sitting in church. Both men struggle with PTSD after returning from war. But both films largely skirt the faith that Kyle and Zamperini said were key to their identity - and their survival. READ MORE
Dads Are Trending In Commercial Advertising
In last October's e-newsletter,we noted a General Mills commercial for Peanut Butter Cherrios that actually honored and celebrated being a dad. It was such a remarkable contrast to how dads have been long depicted in other ads, TV shows and movies. We were encouraged and intrigued. We hoped it just might signal something positive afoot at least in commercial advertising. Well, since then two more corporations have picked up the fatherhood theme. Here they are:Toyota and Dove and the General Mills cheerios commercial.

Men, All of Us Need Battle Brothers for the "Whatevers"
In the movie Gladiator, Maximus Decimus Meridius and his fellow gladiators are in the Coliseum standing before the emperor and a blood thirsty crowd and they're ready to take on whatever Caesar will send against them. Maximus says to his men, "Whatever comes out of these gates, we've got a better chance of survival if we work together. If we stay together we survive. Come together. Lock your shields, stay as one! Hold!"

In John 15:15 Jesus says, "Apart from me you can do nothing." And that means none of us can withstand the challenges, trials and battles that come against us every day in isolation or on our own. We're called to trust and depend on his presence, power and truth to see us through all the "whatevers" of life. God intends us to be in community with other brothers. We're not meant to be "Alone Rangers". The wolf loves the lone sheep. Satan loves "Alone Rangers". God wants us to have "battle brothers" who remind us of the gospel, watch our backside, speak truth to us and cheer for us and affirm us in the fiercest storms.

We can't think of a better place for you to be engaged, encouraged and equipped in the community of men of God than at WACMM's Spring Mid-Atlantic Men's Conference. or a better investment you can make of your time and money. Join hundreds of men for a great day of teaching, worship, camaraderie and battle preparedness. Register Now!

The Real Jesus: Great Ferocity and Extreme Tenderness
At one point in a January 1959 letter from C. S. Lewis to Edward Lofstrom, Lewis responds to something Lofstrom had asked him about by writing --

Gentle Jesus', my elbow! The most striking thing about Our Lord is the union of great ferocity with extreme tenderness. (Remember Pascal? 'I do not admire the extreme of one virtue unless you show me at the same time the extreme of the opposite virtue. One shows one's greatness not by being at an extremity but by being simultaneously at two extremities and filling all the space between')

Add to this that He is also a supreme ironist, dialectician, and (occasionally) humourist. So go on! You are on the right track now: getting to the real Man behind all the plaster dolls that have been substituted for Him. This is the appearance in Human form of the God who made the Tiger and the Lamb, the avalanche and the rose. He'll frighten and puzzle you: but the real Christ can be loved and admired as the doll can't.

Grateful for Sixteen Years of Ministry to Men
Sixteen years ago this month WACMM began in the showroom of a tire store in northern Virginia. We were a handful of brothers who shared a heart to help churches in the DC-area to minister to their men. The Lord has enabled this team of volunteers (WACMM has no paid staff) to build relationships with all kinds of churches in the region.

For sixteen years we've been providing ministry resources, teaching, speaking, coaching, consulting and our popular conferences - all of which aim to help equip pastors, church staff and men's leaders to engage and lead their men into full-orbed, gospel-centric manhood. If you have ministry questions or needs, please feel free to contact us.

Doing Together What We Cannot Do Alone,
