What's Like To Be on the Potter's Wheel
Recently I came across this remarkable demo video of Ceramics Master Hand Lee Hyuang Gu at the American Museum of Ceramic Art. As this gifted man, created a ceramic masterpiece,I was reminded of a number of Scriptures about the potter and the clay - Check Out Video HEREJeremiah 18:3-4 Then I went down to the potter's house, and there he was, making something on the wheel. But the vessel that he was making of clay was spoiled in the hand of the potter; so he remade it into another vessel, as it pleased the potter to make Isaiah 29:16 You turn things around! Shall the potter be considered as equal with the clay, That what is made would say to its maker, "He did not make me"; Or what is formed say to him who formed it, "He has no understanding"? Isaiah 45:9 "Woe to the one who quarrels with his Maker-- An earthenware vessel among the vessels of earth! Will the clay say to the potter, 'What are you doing?' Or the thing you are making say, 'He has no hands'? Jeremiah 18:6 "Can I not, O house of Israel, deal with you as this potter does?" declares the LORD. "Behold, like the clay in the potter's hand, so are you in My hand, O house of Israel. Romans 9:19-21 You will say to me then, "Why does He still find fault? For who resists His will?" On the contrary, who are you, O man, who answers back to God? The thing molded will not say to the molder, "Why did you make me like this," will it? Or does not the potter have a right over the clay, to make from the same lump one vessel for honorable use and another for common use? |
What Every Ministry to Men Needs to Understand and Proclaim
"Brothers, if you have learned the truth of God, manifest it and make it plain to others!
"Proclaim the gospel, not your own thoughts, for it is Christ whom you are to make manifest!
"Teach not your own judgments, conclusions, and opinions, but the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ!
"Let Jesus manifest Himself in His own light. Do not cast a light on Him or attempt to show the sun with a candle. Do not aim at converting people to your views, but let the light shine for itself and work its own way. Do not color it by being like a painted window to it, but let the clear white light shine through you that others may behold your Lord.
"Scatter your light in all unselfishness. Wish to shine, not that others may say, "How bright he is," but that they, getting the light, may rejoice in the Source form which it came to you and to them.
"Be willing to to make every sacrifice to spread this light that you have received! Consecrate your entire being to making known among the sons of men the glory of Christ."
- Charles Spurgeon, from "The Glory of God in the Face of Jesus Christ"

The Value of "Masculine" Ministry
In January 2012, I attended the Desiring God Pastors Conference on "God, Manhood and Ministry: Building Men for the Body of Christ." John Piper gave a keynote address in which he asserted, "Christianity has a masculine feel", which set off incredible blow back from many secularists and some within the church. It was a seminal moment that continues to reverberate. It is well worth reading (and watching) and taking to heart how God made you as a man and called you to lead and serve at home and in church.
Piper opened his talk thusly: "God has revealed himself to us in the Bible pervasively as King, not Queen, and as Father, not Mother. The second person of the Trinity is revealed as the eternal Son. The Father and the Son created man and woman in his image, and gave them together the name of the man, Adam (Genesis 5:2). God appoints all the priests in Israel to be men. The Son of God comes into the world as a man, not a woman. He chooses twelve men to be his apostles. The apostles tell the churches that all the overseers-the pastor/elders who teach and have authority (1 Timothy 2:12)-should be men; and that in the home, the head who bears special responsibility to lead, protect, and provide should be the husband (Ephesians 5:22-33)." Video Clip: Doing What Men Do...
God wired men, pre-disposed us, among other things, to solve problems, to fix things. When we see trouble, we're inclined to move toward it, not to back away. When danger encroaches, our bent is toward protection and rescue. While not exclusively but we see this played out daily as men move boldly and, even creatively, outside themselves to protect and liberate.
Scott Adams of Clifton Arizona and a buddy were on their way to go fishing when they came upon a young red-tailed hawk struggling to get free from the grip of a four-foot Bull Snake. Take a look at this incredible video of Scott Adams doing what men do. You've got to see how what looks like an impossible situation turns out! Check out the video HERE

A Must-Read for Every Man and Ministry to Men
In my years of ministry I've read and reviewed hundreds of books for men by men about manhood and masculinity. Many are out of the same cut of cloth - often a combination of good advice for better living, spiritual technologies to work harder, moral therapies to modify behavior and so on. Rarely is the explicit gospel held forth as what is of "first importance." The only authoritative, trans-formative book for men by men, however, is the Bible. From start to finish it is God's self-revelation and the story of why and how He sends Good News to rescue us from our helpless, hopeless estate.
My secondary go-to source for ministering to men and preaching to myself is great theological works. One such new edition is The Man Christ Jesus: Theological Reflections on the Humanity of Christ by Dr. Bruce Ware. Ware gives us profound insight and appreciation for the significance and reality of the much ignored and misunderstood doctrine of the humanity of Christ. In it he tackles some thought-provoking questions about Christ's identity and he offers a robust defense of the masculinity of the God-man Jesus Christ. READ MORE

Don't Become a Self Promoting Jerk Online
"Social networking can be a fabulous tool for leaders to advance the kingdom. However like so many other things it can also lead us into dangerous territory if unexamined. Below are some tips on how to use social networking well in our celebrity obsessed, image based culture without falling into the sin of pride. I have probably broken several at times, but hopefully they will be of help to you.
"#1 Avoid being a fame-vampire. Just because you had coffee with someone well known doesn't mean that you have to tweet about it. We tend to do this because sub-consciously believe that if we broadcast the fact that we are associating with someone well known, that their fame/influence will rub off on us. Would you be willing to tweet that you just met with a person who had no influence or social capital?" READ MORE

The Gospel and the Gender Wars
"The biblical notion of certain creational distinctives of what it means to be a man or a woman isn't really about "who's in charge," and it certainly isn't about "who's the best." King Jesus dismisses such categories- though common in our commercial, corporate, and athletic spheres-in favor of a newer sense of servant-dominion in His kingdom.
"The chief analogy used for the male/ female relationship-specifically in terms of the marital one-flesh union-is that of head and body. This is because, the Bible maintains, we are not genderless persons who happen to have been placed in arbitrary male and female bodies. Sexual differentiation isn't simply a matter of genital architecture. From the very beginning, Scripture teaches, humanity is created "male and female" ( Gen. 1:27; Mark 10:6)." READ MORE

Stir Up One Another!
"Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful. And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together..." Hebrews 10:23
Having each other's back and cheering for one another are not only for times of trial and temptation, but also for continually reminding the brothers (and ourselves) about the gospel of grace, power and freedom through the person and finished work of Christ. Throughout each day we all need to remember, as well as be reminded by our brothers, that the focal point of our lives and ministry is "Christ and him crucified" (1 Corinthians 2:2).
Let Us Together Boldly Proclaim The Gospel (Ephesians 6:19),
