Church Sign of the Month

>"The Christian husband should love his wife in deed, care for her body and soul, pray for her and with her, not let her lack any good thing, be her protector, comfort her in moments of sadness, and as his other self, daily seek to provide her joy,"  C.F.W. Walther (1811-1887)

>'If we find that our religious life is making us feel that we are good-above all, that we are better than someone else-I think we may be sure that we are being acted on, not by God, but by the Devil."
- C. S. Lewis, Mere Christianity

>"We cling to the Gospel but even our clinging is tainted because we're too glad our sin is covered and not sorry enough that we did it." - Dan Doriani

>"Satan attacks us when we are weakest. But Christ will mend in us all the breaches sin and Satan have made. He 'binds up the brokenhearted' (Isaiah 61:1). And as a mother treats most tenderly the most diseased and weakest child, so does Christ most mercifully bend down to the weakest people. He puts an instinct into the weakest things to rely for support on something stronger than themselves. So the vine clings to the elm. The church's awareness of her weakness makes her willing to lean on her Beloved."
- Richard Sibbes, The Bruised Reed

>"When we stare into the spotlight of success, sin sits comfortably in the front row cheering us on."
- D.A. Horton

>"Christian men trust God so completely that we're unafraid to be put in situations that we'll be in trouble if He doesn't come through".

Why Most Men's Ministry Doesn't Work
To paraphrase Charles Spurgeon: A [men's ministry] without Christ as its beginning, middle and end is a mistake in conception and crime in execution.  Another way to put it is: The gospel must be the fount, fuel and fruit of any ministry to men.

Our friend  Pat Morley also has this to say: "Most men's ministry is doomed to not have much lasting impact because it depends on getting men all amped up, jacked up, fired up, challenged, and inspired to go out and be God's man in the world. So far so good. But the appeal is made "horizontally" to a man's own ability to "make it happen" and "be better" through his own strength, human effort, strong will, striving, and determination. They're encouraged to do the spiritual disciplines, be better dads and husbands, and work for God because it's the "right thing" to do. READ MORE

Culture's Shift on Homosexuality

"Like a tsunami, so-called gay marriage has swept aside just about every obstacle in its path, creating a very different cultural landscape than even seemed possible a few decades ago-or even a few years ago! According to David Von Drehle in Time magazine, the swift embrace of same-sex marriage is nothing short of a "seismic shift" of American culture, one "as rapid and unpredictable as any turn in public opinion." And that, folks, might still be an understatement". READ MORE

2014: The Year of the "Bible" Movie
2014 is being called the "Year of the Bible Movie" with such flicks as Son of God, Noah, God's Not Dead, and Heaven is for Real already box office hits. Later this year a remake of the classic 1956 film The Ten Commandments with Charlton Heston and Yul Brenner will be rolled out. It's titled Exodus: Gods and Kings (in theaters December 12) and is directed by Ridley Scott, an avowed atheist/ agnostic. Scott was also director of Gladiator.

And there's more "bible" movies in the works including a possible remake of Ben Hur in 2016,
the life of King David (also directed by Scott), a Pontius Pilate epic starring Brad Pitt, and a remake of Left Behind starring Nicolas Cage (set to release October 3). Some see all this as heralding the return of a long-neglected film genre - the biblical epic.

CAUTION: Just because a movie is based on a bible story or is called faith-based doesn't mean it's biblical or even worth your time and money to watch. So how do we know?
Jerry Bridges suggests four questions for discerning matters of Christian liberty: Is it helpful? Does it bring me under its power? Does it hurt others? Does it glorify God? Good criteria for the movies we choose to watch or let pass by.

TIP: While not promoted as Christian or faith-based, the movie Unbroken, based on the bestselling book, is the amazing, true story of Louie Zamperini - 1936 Olympics star, WW II POW/hero and Christian - opens Christmas Day. Keep your eye on this one as perhaps the must-see movie of the year.  Check out the new trailer HERE
Doing Together What We Can't Do Alone
This is WACMM's 15th year of ministry to men in the mid-Atlantic region and to more and more men around America. We are firm in the belief that men are foundational and as go the men so go the marriages, the families, the churches, the communities and the culture. The challenge is great, the stakes are eternal. If you are interested in joining our band of brothers for fellowship and the great adventure of ministering to men, please contact us.
