A native of New Britain, CT, Jim received his bachelor’s degree from Central Connecticut State University (CCSU) in 1966. It was during that time, he said, that people were really getting into arts and music. He found his calling in Central’s art department, and his life forever changed. “They let me paint and encouraged my artistic expression,” says Grabowski. “I was insatiable — I couldn’t get enough,” he continues. “I’d be painting 20 hours a day. I was head over heels in love with it. The more I painted, the more I wanted to paint.” Grabowski graduated from CCSU with a bachelor’s degree in 1966, then earned his master’s in education in 1968. After leaving Central, he taught elementary school art for six years, then taught for another three at The Institute of Living in Hartford. He left there in 1970 when he realized he was selling his work as quickly as he could produce it. So he pursued his true passion, which he said was “Painting, painting, painting.” For the last 20 years, Grabowski has devoted himself to his art — primarily large and colorful abstract and landscape paintings — which he creates in his studio in Marlborough, CT, where he lives with his wife. He has received commissions for his paintings from more than 100 national and international corporations. Grabowski’s work has also been sought by non-profit organizations such as Connecticut Public Television, the New Haven Symphony, and the Hartford Graduate Center. In each of his paintings, Jim seeks to reflect the values of his clients, to interpret their aspirations. Right now, his focus is painting expansive abstract canvas, filled with bold color and motion. His inspiration for his work comes from within, rather than outside influences. “I’m always trying to invent new places to go to in my mind, and I have enough to last me the rest of my life,” he says. The Jim Grabowski’s exhibit runs from May 6 – 31, and his paintings are available for acquisition. Geary Gallery is open to the public Tuesday through Saturday, 9:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and is located at 576 Boston Post Road, Darien, CT 06820.
