Measuring Our Memories and Our Dreams

Recently I came across the following statement, attributed to Dr. Howard Hendricks, a popular speaker and author, and a professor at Dallas Theological Seminary, Dallas, Texas:

If your memories are bigger than your dreams, then you have already begun to die. But if your dreams are bigger than your memories, then the best is yet to come.

Immediately I wondered about myself, "Derris, which is bigger, your memories or your dreams?" At my age, in light of Dr. Hendricks' observation, the answer is not altogether comforting!

Then my thoughts turned to churches, especially those in our association. I mused, "For them, which is bigger, their memories or their dreams?" Do you think my musings were more pleasant or more painful? In all candor, it seems that many are immersed in memories, and a few are dreaming that "the best is yet to come." (Sometimes, nightmares are not unheard of!)

In many ways the New Year presents our churches the challenge to dream, to dream big! That challenge calls us all to deeper commitment to seek, to find, and to follow God's purpose and plan for our lives-all to His glory and to the advancement of His Kingdom.

Grace and Peace to all!

Happy New Year!

First, thank you so much to those who donated toys and gifts to assist in SRBA's community Christmas ministry. The WMU ladies, again, collected over 100 toys at their Christmas party!! It was such a joy to talk with families about their kids' interests then look in the boxes and find the exact gift that fulfilled the wishes of the children.  Thank you so much for your generosity!

Children's Ministry Day is sponsored by WMU and is meant to specifically give children hands on opportunities to serve their community. This year's Children's Ministry Day is scheduled for Saturday, February 14th. If you need ideas for what to do with your kids, or would like to join me in ministering to foster homes in our area, I'll be glad to talk to you more about it. You can also visit www.scwmu.org for information, posters, and more.

As you begin your journey into 2015, I pray that the love of God will continue to pour out of you, and into the lives of those you encounter daily. Thank you for continuing to be on mission with SRBA.

Blessings to you in the New Year!
