CAICAM Construction Activity Index Recap - Business Costs Dominate In-House Concerns

Construction Activity Index

CAM Members' assessments of the business situation in their internal operations strengthened slightly in November 2012 from neutral in October, according to responses from CAM's December Construction Activity Index (CAI). The overall situation portrayed by the all variables index (a composite gauge of views of all aspects of activity queried) moved upward to a reading of 52.1, up from 49.5 in October and 48.4 in September. The increase, however, can only be interpreted as rising concern over the weakening in in-house favorable business conditions. This is reflected in the rise in respondent's opinions regarding their costs of doing business with the increase in materials prices to 81.6 from 73.8 and labor rates to 61.9 from 57.1; and the weakening in views about revenue aspects of their businesses with the drop in projects bid to 36.8 from 45.2 and project awards to 36.8 from 38.1. The concern over materials prices is substantiated by the year over year 2.9 percent increase in Detroit area materials prices in early November, as reported by Engineering News Record field reporters, and the 3 percent higher common labor costs and 2.2 percent higher skilled labor costs. These types of increases do not contribute to a contractor's ability to quote competitive prices that insure a reasonable profit, especially during a period of economic uncertainty, increasing regulations and excessive property vacancy that dampen the willingness to invest. While much of the 19 percent drop-off in projects bid between October and November was seasonal in nature, it was much less severe than the 30 percent plunge in 2011, not too different from 22 percent decline in 2010 and in line with the typical slowdown that occurs with the start of winter weather.

To apply, you must fill out an application, submit your OSHA 300A worksheet and your current Experience Modification Rating (EMR) as promulgated by the Compensation Advisory Organization of Michigan.
