As a regional arts council serving six counties in central New York, our work is at times very broad and strategic (for example, our collaborative marketing program and cultural planning). At other times, it is very personal and specific (for example, Dasher's Magical Gift, the Michael Harms Theater Festival, and the upcoming On My Own Time).

One program, however, manages to be both very broad AND very specific. Since 1997, CNY Arts has been designated by the New York State Council on the Arts to serve as a Decentralization site. Every year, we administer Community Arts Grants, Arts Education Grants, and Individual Artist Commissions to dozens of arts projects across the region.

This is where the rubber meets the road for us. Through a competitive grant process with local decision-makers, we are able to provide funding for community theater, outdoor movie screenings, and public arts projects. We help local artists to pursue their passion projects, and teaching artists to bring their talents to schools. We support concert series, reading programs, and summer festivals. These programs fund art where you live, in cities, towns, and villages all across Central New York.

It's through this grant program that we really meet all of the fantastic work done by the artists in our region. And that's what makes this year so special. In 2016, thanks to Governor Cuomo, the New York State Legislature, and NYSCA, this program will benefit from a 20% increase in funding. This increase will make it that much easier for the talented and dedicated artists and arts organizations to continue their great work.

You can learn more about these grants below or on our website, and CNY Arts' Community Grants Coordinator Elizabeth Lane will be crisscrossing the region conducting grants seminars.
