The Importance of Community Arts Funding (Decentralization)
Crucial dollars that support local organizations and individual artists to present accessible community programs are made possible through the regrant program of the New York State Council on the Arts called Decentralization (DEC) that is made possible with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature and administered in our region by CNY Arts.
Established in 1977 by the New York State Legislature, Decentralization is used as a means to provide support for arts, culture, history, and heritage projects in every corner of the state, with local funding decisions made by local panels. The program provides funding for established nonprofits, for volunteer-driven organizations, and for individual artists.
CNY Arts distributed almost $160,000 to support 94 projects in Cortland, Herkimer, Madison, Oneida, Onondaga, and Oswego counties in 2014, a 12% increase over 2013. Grants were awarded to summer concert series, library art programs, historical society exhibits, community theater, and so much more. Decentralization funds art where you live.
In 2015, CNY Arts' Decentralization funding priorities will be shaped by the ENGAGE CNY regional cultural plan generated with the input of over 7000 residents, and over 1000 artists, and arts organizations, making the program more relevant to the needs of our region than ever before.
Guidelines for CNY Arts' 2015 Decentralization program will be released in July. I encourage you to help us spread the word so that every eligible project can be considered for funding.
